Iphone 4 newbie here.

I got really attached to making my own ringtones from mp3s, from "real music", not just purchased ringtones. I was able to assign mp3s as ringtones on my windows based pc phone

Any way to import mp3 files to the Iphone ringtone list ??? I dont' want to have to buy crappy musak sounding ringtones

a very useful ring tone App!

There is a very useful App called Ringtone Designer Pro -- (99 cents).

It makes the creation of ring tones, right on your iPhone, from any music that is transferred to the phone, a quick and easy process.

It includes a fade function, should you wish to have that effect.
Any piece of music that you can play through the iPhone can be made
into a ring tone with this software.

It is rated very highly by other users in the App store.

if you have a mac, use garageband. Drag your song in, and shorten it to 40 seconds or less. Then go to share->send ringtone to iTunes. It may ask you about length. A yellow bar will appear at the top of garageband. Make the yellow bar fit the entire length (under 40 seconds), and then go back to the ringtone export. It should work the second time. Finally, right click the ringtone in iTunes and press "Get Info" if you want to change the title and such.
