Launch-day sales are no doubt limited by availability. Apple can produce more or less of a certain model/colour so that it appears more or less popular than the others.
So true yet every year there are posts and articles saying the iPhone model that sells out quickly is the popular one and the one that’s easy to get a week later is the model not selling. Makes no sense if you don’t know what the supply is.

I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be disappointed by the airs battery life. Had that feeling from the moment they released an external battery pack made just for it. Truly hope I’m wrong though.
The Air has more battery life than my 15 Pro, and most other pre-17-series iPhones other than the Pro Maxes. I don’t remember all those iPhone users complaining about unacceptable battery life. Sure, the other 17 series phones have a big jump in battery life. But the Air is on par or better than most previous iPhones.

I just went to my local Apple Store few hours ago, and something surprised me: The back glass of this year’s iPhones (all of them) appears to be very prone to scratches, despite the publicity of Ceramic Shield 2.

All the 2025 iPhones, the 17, 17 Pro and the Air, had scratches on the rear glass, around the MagSafe area. Obviously, the darker the color, the more visible the scratches are…

Good points. I don’t usually pay attention to much between releases. But when I do hear stuff it’s almost always about battery life. Glad it’s working out for people. I was hoping to be wrong.

Apple: iPhone Air has "strong" Titanium frame!
Real world: The aluminum frame of iPhone 17 is stronger.

Even the aluminum of iPhone 17 is stronger, especially since it's DENSER and THICKER.
iPhone Air is not only less durable than iPhone 17, it is ugly and the design looks very rushed.

Did you deliberately state the exact opposite to what is shown in that video.

Moral of the story:

There’s an option available for all types of customers. Whether it’s the 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, or Air.

It’s all subjective to the user at the end of the day. I personally upgrade every year and have always gone the “Pro” route. And I’m glad I got the Air this year.

I too visited an Apple Store (SF Bay Area) yesterday and tested products. The iPhone 17 Pro Max in particular, A-B testing against my 16 Pro Max. My observations:

• Five hours after opening the store still had a short line to enter the busy store. Most folks looking at iPhones. I was the only person trying to do any kind of image capture comparisons among scores of people. Probably a good thing, because it seemed that the constant 5-hours test usage of the iPhones on their MagSafe mounts may have been causing some camera performance anomalies due to heat. Hard to tell though.

iPhone 17 Pro Max

The new tele lens is a huge improvement.
I am a photographer, and the new telephoto competence makes the 17 Pro a must have for me. Those here that whine about the definition of "8x tele" simply do not get it. These 3-lens iPhone camera systems are different from the one-lens ILC the whiners are trying to compare to. What matters is real-world capture performance, and yes the 12 MP Apple chooses for its marketing metrics is totally reasonable.
[P.S. shoot RAW captures and keep the iPhone camera still.]

• The lack of a gray or equal iPhone Pro color choice absolutely sucks. Apple deserves to lose sales because of it. If the tele lens improvement was not so important to me I would stay with the 16 PM. I verified my reluctant preorder choice of 17 PM silver as the least offensive color choice to me, but I strongly dislike the bright white ceramic back. I would much prefer a light gray ceramic back that did not visually "pop" like the white does.

Maybe next year Apple can bring back the far more elegant titanium alloy frames combined with some muted ceramic fronts/backs. I doubt it though, because they are probably saving a lot of money using the cheap-looking aluminum alloys.

• The aluminum alloy frames present as much cheaper and inelegant. A clear aesthetic/cosmetic downgrade from the titanium alloy 16 Pros. Probably a durability downgrade too, but we can not make that determination based on a day or on a week of clickbait internet nonsense. It will take real-world months.

AirPods Pro 3

• My need regarding AirPods Pro revolved around the fit. The AirPods Pro 2 constantly fell out of my ears. Maybe the new foam works as advertised by Apple, because the new AirPods Pro 3 design did fit my ears much better in walk-around testing. Enough so that I bought a pair.

• Testing the various tricks of the new AirPods Pro 3 in the noisy Apple Store suggests that they work and sound good as expected. ;~) I could not A-B compare against the AirPods Pro 2 however, because I only have one AirPods Pro 2 (the dog chewed up the other one after I fell asleep and it fell out of my ear).

• The case for the new AirPods Pro 3 seems quite large. Hopefully that means even better battery performance.

The iPhone 18 pro models will be identical externally by all reports. The only bit that may change is the camera button which Apple are allegedly looking to simplify design wise to make it cheaper to manufacture.

Everyone saying the Air is "the future"..

How can it be given the camera downgrades?

That's like #1 thing people seem to upgrade for and/or care about on "phones" now.
It's not.

It's just what Apple has been telling you is important in a smartphone. As they had no other reason to get you to upgrade. It's marketing.

Pro cameras that photographers use still have just one lens.

All the dark colors easily scratch and it shows.

All the light colors easily scratch …. it just doesn’t show.

I was pretty surprised at how easily they scratch. They’ve only been on the floor a couple of days, at most.

Man, the second you slap a case on that iPhone Air it stops being Air and instantly becomes iPhone Heavy. The design? Honestly pretty underwhelming when I saw it in person. And that orange shade? It might as well come with a label saying, ‘Please rob me.’ I know this is an unpopular opinion and I’m bracing for the dislikes, but come on… I love tech, I upgrade every year, and I get that each update is just a small step. But this year? First time I seriously thought about skipping the Pro Max. Ended up grabbing silver since last year I had white, so at least color-wise I’m good
Why are we "slapping" cases on our phones? All this slapping. I gently push my phone into my case. And the point of the air is that it doesn't need a case. Hence the durability build. Titanium, ceramic etc. you don't need one

Visited the Apple Store on release day to browse the new models and if available, purchase an iPhone Air just for fun as a secondary phone on my other line.

After seeing the various reports and videos I was interested to see for myself. YouTubers focus typically favors clicks, engagement and impressing Apple with their fawning reviews. Reality can be vastly different.

We know the Air is somewhat of an engineering marvel, yet it’s not without its shortcomings. I'm not comparing it to other iPhones but rather comparing it to how I would actually use it and what I want in a thin phone.

Yes it’s beautiful and I don't place battery life at the top of my priorities so there's that. Testing the single speaker revealed dismal performance. Even for occasional use (I have ear buds) it’s a flat monotone experience. Not surprising yet disappointing. The display is typical iPhone, very nice.

Interesting the only new iPhones they had available for sale were the Air models in Black and White, no iPhone 17, no iPhone Pro or Pro Max.

Because of the shortcomings, especially what Apple didn't include compared to the brilliant Galaxy Edge which I currently own, I decided to wait until next year. Surely by then Apple will add dual speakers and possibly two cameras to become a true competitor to the well equipped Edge.
The Galaxy Edge will unfortunately not hold onto more than a third of its purchase price after a year, that’s the thing I dislike about Samsung phones, I got a Z Flip 7 and have owned most of the Fold and Flip line so I’m not anti Samsung at all but the Edge is just a skinny Galaxy with the same design and not the same (to my eyes) desirability as the Air, I think that’s why it’s sold so poorly. It’s great that’s you’re happy with it though.

Zach (I hope you're reading this right now) was a bit sensationalist in the description key-frame labeling of this video.

It took a lot more Newtons than his initial hand-bend test to get that unit to break.

This is like using a photo of the results of a 230kmh crash-test to describe that the construction of a BMW M4 is suss.

Honestly glad l hear it. But it’s also only been one day. Hard to say what your normal usage is going to be like in one day, especially when it’s new. After 2-3 months with it will be the real test. Like I said in my op, I do hope I’m wrong. It just seems like apple at least, views the battery lie as a problem.
Battery is typically worse in the first few days. It's indexing in the background which is a battery hog.

I am continually surprised that the 'telephoto' option becomes so important.

I'm more of a macro guy, and the practical in-my-hand relevance of the improvements therein are what inevitably draw-me-in...

Yep - I can crop to zoom in (especially with so many pixels to play with) but it's not possible to crop to zoom out 😁
In my experience, the ultrawide is useless because I can typically step back to expand the frame.

But when taking pictures of distant objects like cell sites, where you can’t always get as close as you want, the telephoto far outperforms digital zoom. Wide lens cropped pixelates way too quickly. Just going from the 13 mini’s wide lens to the 13 Pro’s telephoto made a major difference for me. The 13 Pro to the 15 Pro is better, but not substantially. I’d expect the 17 Pro’s telephoto to handily outperform the 15 Pro, though.

Deep Blue for the win. But will be putting brown Nomad leather case on it.

Yes it’s true, unlike iPhones Android phones in general do not hold their value. Fortunately resale isn’t a deal breaker for me as I am a cross platform enthusiast that’s carried two phones iPhone and Android for over a decade. Each platform has it’s pros and cons.

Experience with many phones has taught me the flat front and flat rear profile with a reasonable camera bump suits my preferences. This is a major reason I do like the Edge.

Conversely the relatively large “platform” on the rear of the iPhone Air takes getting used to. Yet Apple did do a beautiful job with it. Going forward I’m expecting Apple to make some smart improvements which will make the Air an excellent choice.
