Slowly moving towards a water proof iPhone! Not that I ever want to bring my phone into the pool but hey, something nice to have if you drop it in a puddle I suppose!

Considering that water can be a vehicle to conduct electricity, I imagine actually using your phone with any water on the screen would be quite difficult. I would think you would have to wipe it dry first, but I think being able to use it in the pool or ocean would be pretty sweet.

Well where I live it rains a lot, so I'd rather have that. :)
No more running for cover to protect the phone!

You can just put it in your pocket in that case. A little rain isn't really how that works. It's when people accidentally submerge the phone in water.

Yes, but... it's not like there is any shortage of these phones. They've sold at least 13 million. And that statistic is outdated by a week now.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time. It blows my mind that these phones are nearly as beautiful internally as they are externally.

More internally these days.

How is it a waste when iFixit does a tear down? They're a company that specializes in iPhone and other electronics repair. It's easy for them to put the thing back together just as well as it was before.

It's actually not uncommon for ifixit to destroy and or damage the device they are tearing down. That said, I do agree with you in th at, that's what they do and people want to see it. Hardly a waste. Plenty of people who like to see the engineering that went INSIDE the iPhone and iFixit is catering to those people. Nothing wrong with that.

No... it wasn't pushed as a feature or even mentioned for that matter... I think they left it as a surprise feature so it would get after release attention. A brilliant marketing move and kudos' to Apple for doing this! Awesome!

I think it would be some time before Apple market the iPhone as waterproof.. it would just invite some serious water testing, and any failures would be highlighted across websites such as this one.

However, of course they will be quietly improving the device structure with each new model, to make it more and more water resistant.

In much the same way as the screen is improving to become less likely to shatter when the phone is dropped... but it will be a long time before they announce a device as 'shatter-proof'!

I foresee two realities if Apple advertises a phone as waterproof. 1. Kids like to test waterproof-ness of their cases (which I think is a new form of "risky behavior"), and will do the same with their phones. 2. For laughs, people are still wired to push a fully dressed person in the pool. This happened to a friend when he got his launch-day iPhone 4. This many years into the smartphone era, I still occasionally see excited people threaten to push people in pools.
Thats true on your second point. I have seen it happen. I would be so mad if someone did that to me.

If they go with a non-metallic, silicone body, it might be pretty indestructible under normal circumstances (drops on pavement, drops in water, spills, etc.), but I don't imagine it will look as luxurious and premium as they do now.

They should make the next iPhones with Gorilla glass.

Taking you literally here....they do...Apple just doesn't use its commercial name in its documentation. The 6s has a upgraded (over the 6) gorilla glass 4 surface on it. So great Corning created it for the iPhone many years ago.

I think the new iPhone-Lease-program gave them some needed motivation for this.
A year from now Apple will be sitting on a ton of used phones and this will probably make the refurb-cost go down a lot.

No. Atomic blast proof. People will tear it down to find out what they are using as a blast shield.

And then iPhone thefts will soar even more as criminals harvest the parts and use em as improvised shields against police gunfire while they steal more iPhones and commit other crimes
( 3/4 Sarcasm/joking btw )

#WatergateScandal

More like trying to prevent #WaterGate from being a thing other than a hotel or dam :p:D

I would think silicone would just cause it retain too much heat inside for the components.
You can buy a cover if you want though.
Why would silicone be indestructible though? Isn't it very bendy? I would think the silicone would survive but the jnternals would be broken.

However, from what I've seen, the 6s models are pretty freak'n waterproof. One video shows it soaking in water for more than 20 mins. That would have saved my butt a few years ago when the tide came in and soaked my iPhone 4.

But your point is well taken... maybe they don't feel it's perfected and don't want to open themselves up to people trying to prove it's really not 100% water tight... this way it's like an unexpected gift and if it fails, they never said it was a feature to begin with.

I'm one of the cautious ones, I mean I absolutely love this device as it has never failed on me, plus it'd be a really expensive risk.

Regardless, with hopefully next generation of iPhones going water resistant would be an absolute welcome surprise, I'm sure you'd agreed too. :)

I'd probably be more inclined to answer calls in the rain, more importantly it'd be great to shoot photos and videos without much concern again.
( Ex-Xperia user, loved that feature until the software crapped on me )

I wonder if the people that actually get these phones to destroy them, test their limits, and "tear them down" actually pay for them? Something tells me they don't. Those of us who actually have to fork out $500+ on these devices have the common sense not to intentionally destroy them...

I smell a #Watergate fiasco soon as people start putting their iPhones underwater to learn that water resistant does not necessarily mean water proof.

I don't get it.
They seal the screen ,
And then after a repair it will obviously not seal as before..
Kinda stupid.
This rubber or glue seems like a one time add. A repair won't put a new one.. I guess.

can you even seal a headphone jack? You can put a cover like the life proof cases, but I think you need to have the contacts free to get a connection and they can't be waterproof I would think.
The Z1 Compact that I had before moving back to the iPhone was waterproof, and had no cover over the headphone jack, so Sony found a way to do it.

It depends on how hard it is raining and how long you are stuck in it. I had two phones get water damaged from rain even in my pocket, and one of those times it was in the pocket of a waterproof jacket, but after enough time the water still gets through.
