ok the rumoured features for next air 3 next year are

3GB of ram

what else would you have to see to make you upgrade from the beast that is air 2?

Touch ID 2.0 you forgot about this one?
More megapixel DSLR like camera and 4K video so Apple can put all camera makers out of business

There's 2 solid features I want in the next iPad and it's all I really need to see to have me sold.

3D Touch - I'm utilizing it constantly while browsing forums and whatnot with my phone but can't help but wish I could use it on the iPad with its bigger screen.
Touch ID 2. I've always thought the iPad opened so slowly with Touch ID, I can't wait for the faster unlocking speeds.

And that's it so far, anything else would be a bonus upgrade to me!

What I'd really like:
  • AMOLED ~4K (with 4:3 ratio e.g. 4096 x 3072) display without a Pentile Matrix
  • 4GB or more RAM
  • A10X (to drive 4K pixels)
  • Pencil support
  • 256GB option at the current 128GB price point (more capacity like 512GB would be awesome)
Nice to have but not critical:
  • Waterproof
  • USB-C
  • Fast charging
  • Lighter / smaller bezels without compromising battery life
Mixed feelings:
  • 3D Touch
  • Curved / bendable display
  • No more chamfered edges (like iPhone 6/6S design)

Well, let's see.

Stylus? - don't want it.
3D Touch? - don't want it.
More RAM? - unless iOS changes a lot, don't need it.
Faster SoC/GPU? - unless iOS changes a lot, don't need it.
Higher DPI? - don't need it.
Better camera? - don't use it.

I'm pretty well taken care of right now... ;)

AMOLED screen would be a big draw to me. My Note 4 screen is jaw dropping. That screen on an iPad would be unreal.

3D Touch might be nice too. Haven't tried it yet. Would also like to see Pencil support on all iPads eventually, as they'd be great note taking devices with the right apps.

Also want to see fast charging like I have on my Note 4. Simple feature but hugely useful.

I have to admit, the Air 2 in its current state is really amazing. It's hard to imagine anything substantially better.

Unless there's some change in basic capabilities - but I don't see that happening. That's part of why tablet sales are not growing. The platform is becoming mature.

What I basically want is an iPad Pro Mini, i.e. an A9X, pencil support, and smart connector. I will buy that day one no questions asked.

On a related note, I started wondering the other day if 3D touch would really work on an iPad. Not so much from the software angle, but in terms of how you use the device. The iPhone, Watch, and MacBook all have something behind where your pressing, so you can press hard and the device won't move. With the iPad though, a lot of the time you're either holding it by the side with one hand, or its in some kind of stand with essentially all of the support at the bottom.

In either of these cases, it seems like pressing hard wouldn't work, since you'd either just push it off the stand, or you'd have to counter press with the hand that's holding the iPad, which seems like it'd be pretty uncomfortable if you do it too often. Not saying it'll definitely never come to the iPad, but it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't.

Same here - haven't heard any suggestions that would compel me to spend hundreds of dollars to replace my 128GB LTE Air 2.

  • better screen (no book spine, uniformly lit, etc) is by far my number one, dont know if that means those other screen techs other than LCD
  • lighter, not that its not light now, but iphone 6 type lightness would be amazing (yes I know im dreaming)
  • 3D touch - i expect this to be a given in Air 3
  • even more battery life - its fine now but can never have too much; ipad has been at 10 hours since inception, i know theyve gotten lighter and thinner and its a worthy trade off but having 15 hrs+ would be a very nice addition
  • bring back a hardware rotation switch!

All I can think of is smaller bezels, 3D Touch, a9x or a10x, 4gb of ram, lighter and longer battery life.
