I’ve just bought an AppleTV 4K to use as a main box in the U.K. while I’m in between moving houses. I want to subscribe to an app to get ad-free viewing but each time I do, I get an error saying ‘In-App Purchases are disabled on your device’.

I have checked the settings and there are zero restrictions on but I’m still getting this error. I’ve tried updating the AppleTV software, tried rebooting the AppleTV, tried resetting the app that I’m trying to use, I have tried the subscription on my phone (which worked) then tried to ‘restore purchase’ on the AppleTV and got the same error about in-app purchases being disabled.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I launch this thing? Haha

which app are you talking about? it may be an issue someone knows about. Usually an in-app purchase to remove ads will be tied to account login so that could be why the restore purchase wasn't working

The ITVhub app. I use the same Apple ID/iTunes account (my phone was used to setup the AppleTV so it’s all linked).

Have you tried signing out of your AppleID and sign back in again.

I don't usually do in app purchases however I just check on my Apple TV 4K (tvOS 15) and it presents the same problem. I ever set restrictions up and then allowed in-app purchases. I also tried All 4 along side ITVhub. Interestingly if I try to set up a britbox subscription then this comes up on screen asking me to authorise either using an apple device or via password. (britbox on the 16/09 updated their app whilst All4 was 01/06 and ITVhub was 24/08) so potentially there could be some back end changes the apps need to have done in preparation for the new version of tvOS .

Checking my Apple TV 4K (tvOS 14.7) then the in-app purchase for ITVhub shows up as normal prompting for my password.

which version is your Apple TV currently running?

Perhaps give itv an email as it seems they may need to change something their end with regards to the AppleTV app.

Thank you both of you. I was going out of my mind thinking I was doing something wrong. I’ll send an email over to itv.

@Scutt I updated tvOS as part of my troubleshooting. Just checked and it’s on 14.7, which you said works on yours, so that’s odd. Going to try tvOS 15 now and see what happens.
 
@lumencreative did you ever resolve this issue? it still plagued me in iOS 15 and updating to 15.1 rc today to was still occurring. so I deleted itv hub (also all 4 as that had the same issue) and reinstalled which then allows the in app purchase to show up properly again.
