In Design, hidden characters not showing, help

I'm in normal view mode and I've got a text box selected and "Show Hidden Characters" selected from the type menu but the hidden characters are not showing.

Why?

After trying to work it out for half an hour it turns out that quitting and restarting Indesign has made it work again. (that was the gf's suggestion, that I thought wouldn't work🙂)
