When iOS13 came out, you were given the choice to "upgrade" Reminders to enable new features like smart lists, etc, or to retain the old style Reminders. The new upgraded Reminders aren't compatible with earlier versions of iOS and macOS - specifically unless your Mac is running 10.15 Catalina or later and all your iOS devices are running iOS13 or later, you won't be able to access Reminders on those other devices.

I declined the Reminders upgrade on my iPhone when updating to iOS13 because I also have an old iPad Air which only runs on up to iOS12 and an iMac still running High Sierra. This way I could continue using Reminders across all these devices (as long as I don't accidentally press that big blue "Upgrade" button on the main Reminders screen on my iPhone)

Question: now that iOS14 is out, is it still a user-controlled option to continue using the old pre-iOS13 style Reminders? Or does the iOS14 update force Reminders to "upgrade" ?

I'm hoping to upgrade my phone to iOS14 but first want to make sure it's not going to break Reminders access between my other (older) devices.

thats a good question. It was annoying when this happened but I kept my mac on Mojave so wasn't able to use reminders anymore. I'll tell you what I did as a solution and you might want to consider this as well...

I created a "reminders" folder in Notes and put a list for each one, like "things to draw", "things to watch", "things to buy", "things to fix". And then I just emtied and deleted the reminders app.

thanks for the suggestion. but I rely too heavily on multiple lists and scheduled items in Reminders a to try to fake it using Notes. Of course one day when I update my iPad, Mac hardware I can just move everything to the new Reminders, compatible across all

In the meantime I'm hoping that someone out there who declined the Reminders update when upgrading to iOS13, and who has now updated to iOS14 can verify if the old style Reminders still work (i.e. there's still a blue "Upgrade" button in iOS14 Reminders app but you're not forced to upgrade if you don't want to)
