Also have in mind, if you go for an external display and a Mac, that some displays have an internal fan too.

Screens generate a lot of heat..

Silent PC is a thing and it's even more expensive and restrictive to play in than Macs 😀

Regardless if you're looking for actual quiet then any laptop plugged into and external display isn't the way to go.

FWIW I thin the 6,1 is pretty loud

For just writing not at all. Under heavy load, yes...

Both, I can hear that fan even when idle heck I heard it in the Apple store I can't hear anything else but I can hear fans.

If you put your ear over the fan there is a chance you 'll hear something.
But if you are just typing nothing at all. And always you can place it as far as you want from you, there is a big difference with the iMac's constant noise in front of your face.

I can hear it all the time if it's sitting on my desk...but yes it can be pushed away, locked in a closet, or chained to rings in the basement 😉

I really do not know... I have two of them, they 're on the desks too but they 're completetly silent. (When not pushed)

Some people are just hyper-sensitive to noise, heat, glossy screens, etc.... I understand that.

Reminds me of when I was growing up my Dad had an automotive repair shop. People would come in and say my car is going tic, tic, tic or some other normal engine sound. He could have said for $2,000.00 I can fix that. But, as most were friends and long time clients he would tell them to Turn the Radio up. 😎

So, Pop some noise-cancelling ear-buds in and go about your business..... Listen to a little Mozart while you work.

Or, pay a few thousand for a new computer....
