After going through countless numbers of warranty swaps for various problems -- with backlight bleed and dust under the screen being the two main ones -- I finally managed to get one that's pretty much perfect. There's almost no backlight bleed, and there's ZERO dust particles under the screen. The only real thing I noticed is the slightly uneven backlight along the left edge of the screen. But honestly, it's so subtle, I think I can learn to live with it.

For those who are sticklers about these sorts of things like I am, don't give up. You will eventually find one. And it *will* be worth it.

Feel free to tell your experiences with this sort of thing, too. I'd love to hear them. :)

I honestly never had issues like the ones you experienced with my iPads. But I will say, at
Least Apple resolved all your issues versus some other companies may not have been as assistive.

Ha, that's putting it lightly. Lenovo don't even cover dead pixels on brand-new machines, unless it's got 3 or more.

Whereas you've got some people here swapping out devices every day because there's the tiniest of marks or a hint of yellowing under certain conditions, whilst angrily rambling that Apple's QA is rubbish. They'll definitely get a shock if they leave the ecosystem. :D

Not directed at the OP. Just what you said got me thinking.

That's why I have become so loyal to Apple. You pay the premium, but at what cost to the customer, in return with a warranty and reliable customer service.

Oh God- don't even get me started. Having the same issues as you did- iPads 8 and 9 are coming tomorrow.

It all started on Black Friday when I purchased three from Target (I am well experienced with Apple's lack of quality control with screens, so yes, I knew to purchase more than one at a time with the odds of getting an unacceptable unit).

Anyway, one had a bright white spot in the screen, the other had a black particle visible on light backgrounds- I returned those two and I kept the third thinking it was fine, but after a few days I noticed it had a small area that is very dark along the left edge. I wouldn't have had a problem with it had it been the entire edge and uniformly darker, but while scrolling text on a web page or in iBooks, it is very noticeable and annoying as the words go though light and dark areas.

I purchased two refurbs from Apple - on the first iPad, half of the screen looked gray and dingy as if it was dirty (no other way to describe it), the other iPad- half of the screen was visibly pinkish on white webpages. Sent those two back for a refund.

Ordered two more from Walmart - one had a dead pixel, the other was pretty good on white pages - one corner is visibly darker but bearable .... but it has awful spots of backlight bleed with black backgrounds.

So, I ordered two more from Best Buy this time, and this is my last try. They're arriving tomorrow.

I honestly don't think I am being outrageous when I expect a decent screen on a Pro device. My iPhone 5S has a great screen and that only took me two tries (first device had a dead pixel and the Apple Store genius saw it right there when I purchased it and opened it in front of him, so he took it back and gave me another - that one had bad spotlighting at the top edge which he also saw, gave me a third and it's perfect).

I am an artist and will be using this screen with stark white and black backgrounds quite often. I need uniformity. Call me whatever you wish, I don't care. It's my money, and I am not an idiot. I have had bad luck in the past with Apple's screens, but this is the worst so far. I have no other complaints with the devices - and I would happily accept a unit with a scratch or a scuff on the aluminum to get an acceptable screen. And no, I am not interested whatsoever in devices from other companies. I love Apple products, their software, and their ecosystem. I'm not leaving- I just hope these screen issues become a thing of the past whenever Apple switches to another manufacturing process or type of screen.

EDIT: By the way- I only ordered one Apple Pencil and of course it was perfect on the first try. I love my Apple Pencil!

Just an update- the 8th and 9th iPad arrived today. One has a dead black pixel, the other a particle under the glass. Every one of them is going back. May try again in a few months, but pretty disgusted. The one with the dead pixel was PERFECT otherwise, which makes this even worse.

I am legally blind and so far all of iPhone and iPad have no problem. And I also have color blind so I can't tell the difference on color screen.

Are you sure it's "dead" and not just "stuck"?
The closest I've had is what I thought was a dead pixel on my Windows 8 Samsung tablet from a few years back. It was really annoying and persisted for days (after reboots and the like). After 3 or 4 days I turned it on and it was functional for the rest of the time I owned it.

I have no idea - it could be either. I don't care if it's dead or stuck though - it's black and visible on all colors but black. It's faulty- not about to keep it to see if it will become "unstuck" and then be out of my return period if it decides to "stick" again after I've missed the last day to return. Plus, I need my credit back on my card ASAP if I'm not keeping it.

Of course they've had "no problem" - you're legally blind and color blind.

Sorry, but this is what this thread makes me think of.....

Or just more astute and observant. This is not meant as an insult, I wish I wasn't as observant!

Fair enough. But astute and observant could easily be, "petty" and "anal". Also not meant as an insult. Im sure something along the lines has been off on my stuff, but I never really cared enough to look that closely.
And here class is an exquisite example of passive aggressive interaction delivered with a touch of millennial class ;)
