I didn’t choose Midnight—it was chosen for me, by my girlfriend who bought be a fully loaded (8/10, 24GB, 2TB) MacBook Air M2.

Yes, I’m a very lucky man.

She choose it because she knows me, and she got advice from a good tech friend as well. Her analysis, and mine, of the colors runs like this:

Space Gray: current leader, all my current Macs are Space Gray since 2016. I like it. It’s closer to my original Titanium PowerBook, and was great since I was tired of Silver/Default. It’s a little dull, tbh, but I liked it more than Silver which I was tired of.

Silver: I had this for every MacBook from 2006 to 2016, so I’m still finding myself tired of it. Wears great, no arguments—but for me, it makes me feel like it’s 2008 again, and I’d like to move forward.

Starlight: Look, you can love this all you want, but to me it doesn’t read as gold—it reads as “Silver but the white point is off” or “Silver with a slight tint so it won’t match silver things while still basically being silver”.

Which brings us to Midnight.

I can not emphasize how fantastic this color is. It’s the black MacBook I never knew I fully wanted…but BETTER, because the blue has depth and texture, and shifts in the light in fantastic ways. I hope they do more dark colors in this treatment, it’s such a compelling modern updated way to have a ‘colorful’ laptop.

It’s the best looking design I’ve ever seen for a laptop from Apple, and I have been here a long time—I have literally seen them all, back to the PowerBook 100 series.

In Midnight this joins a very short list of Apple laptops, like the black MacBook, and the clamshell iBooks, and my beloved original Titanium PowerBook, for pure uniqueness and gorgeousness.

If you haven’t seen it in person, you don’t know, because it can’t actually be captured in video well. You have to be there.

Now. The fingerprints.

I’m pretty OCD about electronics. I try not to be, and I work at it, but I get it. And I knew as soon as I saw pics online that this would be an issue. I was nervous waiting for my MBA.

It’s great. It turns out I needed…an Apple Polishing Cloth! :)

I kid. I have one now, but mostly I use microfiber cloths I had already bought in the past.

It shows fingerprints, I agree. Then I clean it. My experience so far is that they come off immediately every time, and that it’s just not that big a deal. It’s also kind of good for me—helps me work on my OCD by relaxing into it.

Some people buy it and can’t deal. I get that. That’s what the 2 week return period is for.

I’d urge folks to find out for themselves, though. Because if my girlfriend hadn’t bought it for me, I might have wussed out and chosen Space Gray without even giving it a try. And I can tell you, that would have been a mistake for me.

It’s honestly such an incredible color, I’m dealing with it. And if that’s not an Apple experience, I don’t know what is!

I also like my midnight.. had it for several weeks now.. haven't wiped it once. one fingerprint is indeed annoying. a textured surface is great!

Yep, love the MBA. Love the midnight blue color. Tolerate the fingerprints, and they are a decreasing issue for me in terms of being an annoyance...

It's good to see some positivity towards the Midnight MBA. Probably that will be the machine to replace my Intel 16" that I use to carry around at school. If Midnight doesn't come to the Pro, that is. I'm pretty obsessed with my (at least Apple) stuff being clean, so it's nice to hear that fingerprints - while visible - don't seem to be too much of an issue.

OH and no one mentions this, but the deep blue-grey of the keys themselves looks FANTASTIC, especially under strong sunlight.
I haven't seen any of the M2 MacBook Airs in person. Are the keys deep blue-grey on only the Midnight model, or are the keys deep blue-grey on all four colors of M2 MacBook Air?

I saw one for the first time yesterday in an Apple store, and I counted exactly two fingerprints on it. I expected it to look like a greasy mess given much of what I've read about it. After all, that device gets handled all day long, I'm sure.

Note: I handled it too, of course. And left no visible fingerprints behind.

The color, like the OP stated, looks way better in person than in photos/videos.

I’ve talked to Apple employees at the Apple Store and they are constantly wiping down the Midnight models. That is probably why the one you looked at didn’t have many fingerprints. One guy seemed pretty unhappy with the amount of cleaning the Midnight MBA took.

I love mine though. I keep a microfiber cloth nearby. I’m used to that because of using iPads anyway. Same problem.

Definitely like this color. I have gotten silver for everything (except my 13PM in SB). The midnight and starlight both look great on the Air. I’m kind of glad that my 16” M1 Pro didn’t have these options so I wouldn’t have to make that decision 🙂.

Word on the microfiber cloth — everyone should be careful with these as they aren’t all created equal. I’ve scratched an older MacBook with microfiber. I would either use the Apple one or one designed for glasses.

Apple cloth was hopeless on midnight when I had it, even on my iPad prefer a good microfibre

You don’t think they may have just cleaned It before you got there?

I'm not totally certain, but I *think* it's just the Midnight ones that aren't black. OR it could be that the keys are black, but the color difference with the case makes them show up this way—it's a very chimerical color scheme, it changes all the time depending on lighting.

I figured they probably wipe them at the start of the day, but it sounds like they’re more work than that even. Still, I handled it for a few minutes and left no visible fingerprints behind, so I guess some people will just leave more prints than others.

My Apple cloth totally works, but I do rather prefer my cheap-ass microfiber cloths, which *knock wood* have never actually scratched anything.

I also like Midnight on the MacBook Air, but hate it on Apple Watches and iPhones. Some colors look great on some products and terrible on others, but Apple apparently feels like they have to have consistency across their very diverse product line. I also wish Starlight would go away, but it looks like we're stuck with it for the next few years.

That's true, I have never considered Midnight before this, though I usually get a pro phone, and I don't do the watch, so I probably also haven't actually been considering it.
