I’m trying to remember how this works and which route I should take.

I’m on the IUP. If I select to pick up my new phone in store, will I have to turn in my old phone right then, or can I ship it later? I don’t think that apple will send me a return label and box if I pick up in store.

Usually, I’ve preferred setting up my new phone at home while I still have my old phone to transfer everything over, and then setup the new device from an iCloud backup. I like having the old phone nearby in case there’s a glitch in the transfer, and I can start over.

If I pick up the new phone in store, I’ll have to turn in my old phone at the same time, then I’ll have to restore the new phone from the iCloud backup without the benefit of having the old phone handy. The setup/transfer has always worked really well when I have both old and new phones in proximity. However, surrendering my trade-in in the store has the advantage of closing the old IUP loan immediately without sweating out shipping it back via fedex. Last year my 15PM got lost or stolen on the way back to Apple: it was eventually handled by Apple, but I was quite anxious for a while.

I think I answered my question: pick up in store. 😊

I pick up in store, go home and open the phone box in silence. Then I start doing the transfer and check on it every once in a while. No waiting at the store dealing with WiFi speeds and lots of people standing shoulder to shoulder. A week or so later I take in my old phone and close acct once I’m sure the new phone is working well.
Also if you have an Apple Watch it’s much easier to transfer watch to new phone if you have the old phone in hand than dealing with it after the phone is gone. I’ve done this twice over the years and I lost health info. YMMV.

This would be my preferred way of doing it… but I feel like I remember Apple specifically saying that you have to give back your old phone before leaving the store with your new phone if you’re doing in-store pickup with the iPhone Upgrade Program.

Have you been part of the iPhone Upgrade Program when doing this?

I am part of the iPhone upgrade program and last year I did what carbphrek did and it worked flawlessly. I was able to leave the Apple store with my old phone and my new one, do the transfer at home, and then return the old phone to the apple store a few days later.

Wouldn't it be beneficial to be in a place with employees and plenty of extra stock in case it does?
In theory, that could be an advantage. But on "iPhone Pick-up day", my local Apple Store is very crowded and the wi-fi is very very slow. The last time that I did the transfer in-store, it took 2+ hours and it was hard to even find a seat. Not a pleasant experience. I prefer doing the transfer at home.

Is it required that everyone on the program go to the store on the same day?

Yes I’ve been iup for at least 6 years and I have been picking up the phone and bringing back the previous phone a week later for 4 years so far. I tell the tech that I’m using iup and from what I’ve seen and been told they do not close out the older citizen loan since the loan is still open until end of September. There are 2 loans during the month of September if you do not return one you are still paying monthly on it. I am prepared to hand over the phone if required but that hasn’t happened…fingers crossed since I jinxed myself. 🤦‍♀️ Hope this makes since I’m on pain meds, had ear surgery yesterday totally missed the event.

This I didn't know!

This time I am ordering the 17 Air and Ultra 3 watch.

Both are being traded in so can I return the trade at the store instead of mailing it in?

This happened to me last year. I think I will bring my MBP in with me and do my backup from my laptop vrs. the store wifi. Then I can just leave my trade in there and not worry about taking it back, dropping it, it breaking, etc.

Yes it’s crazy slow WiFi at the store, I’ve asked people how long they have been there and so far 7 hours is the winner. They were doing a watch and iphone, first time using iPhone and Apple Watch so they needed lots of help.

Yes you can trade in at the Apple Store. I really do not like to send in trades via mail. It takes 30 seconds to trade it in, go in the week after launch to finish the trade. Before I walk out the store I receive an email that my trade has been accepted.

I’m on the iPhone upgrade program and my plan is to get the phone shipped to me so I get it on release day and avoid the crowds at the Apple Store, then take my 16 pro max in to the store a few days later to turn it in and have my old loan closed out. This way I have time to setup the new phone at my leisure and with faster WiFi than if I was sitting in the Apple Store on release day, but I have the convenience of turning my old phone in and not having to wait longer for the loan to close out.

If you get the new phone shipped, you'll also get a trade in kit shipped to you, so you never have to go to the store to turn it in.

Right of course, I’d just rather take my phone to the store vs mailing it in cause I had issues a few years ago where Apple claimed I mailed them an empty box (they eventually got it straightened out that the phone was stolen somewhere along they way back to them but it look several months and a lot of undue stress).

This has been my experience: the Apple Store people said I had to turn in my old phone right then.

I've had too many issues with UPS to do home delivery any more. They use to require a signature and if you weren't home to sign for it, it would go back to the UPS warehouse and you would have to go there to get it. Talk about a PIA! Waiting with 50 other folks for your particular driver to return to the warehouse and then wait for the truck to unload and then for them to find your phone and call your name. a 2-3 hour ordeal. Never again

I tried that one year, and the Apple Store rep said that since I didn’t do an in store pickup, they could not accept the trade in store (they tried, but their system wouldn’t process the trade): I had to ship it back.

Oh wow, that’s crazy, thanks for letting me know! I did speak with an Apple customer service rep when I asked if what was trying to do would be possible and they assured me it would be allowed but you often get different answers from different people so it’s good to have someone with real world experience share that. May have to rethink if I want to chance it or not..
