You are likely overestimating the production cost of foam cushions and light seals. We know there are 4 cushion sizes, I think it safe to assume 4-5 light seals at most.

Let's assume it costs Apple $10 PER light seal and cushion(it doesn't, nowhere near that with Apples scale and logistics). But let's just be stupid about it. That would be $40 of cushions and $40 of light seals. $80 of "included" accessories FOR A $3500 device.

A secondary advantage to including all options to the end user is the ability to share and show off the product with friends and family. Given that XR is almost impossible to properly advertise for, and the only way to assess it is to physically try it, the inclusion of all available cushions and light seals is a no brainer.

EDIT: Also there is zero chance you would "Guess" your light seal size, I was being facetious in agreeing with how stupid of a thing that is to say. They would obviously have an app that scans your face and chooses the likely correct light seal if they were to do that. Which by the way, is even dumber, because it would make shipping an absolute nightmare with having to pick/pull single pieces of foam cushions and creating a custom box when they can just add them all to one box and not have to deal with that nightmare.

Have you actually looked closely at those fabrics for the inserts? They no not look cheap at all, in fact it is probably more expensive to manufacture than an Apple branded watch band that starts at maybe $50 or so. I’m not sure why you think it would cost $10!

There is absolutely no way Apple will include all the sizes for the light seal and headband in the box.

If you paid attention to how Apple does business you’d understand that what you suggest doesn’t make any sense.

We’re talking about the same company that sells a display for $5000 without a stand! Then turns around and offer a stand for $1000! Hello!

Do you understand the difference between production cost and MSRP? It's kinda important in this scenario.

And I would bet my life it costs apple less than $5 to manufacturer those watch bands.

You keep assuming that all of this is some sort of "add on" to the headset. It's likely $3500 includes the cost of the fitting accessories to begin with. Hence the insanely high price.

My point is the inserts for the Vision Pro looks much more expensive to manufacture than the watch bands that sell at starting of $50. Meaning the inserts alone probably sells for more than $50 a piece and therefore costs more than $10 you’re assuming.

No matter how you try to justify Apple putting at least 8 inserts into a box doesn’t make sense. Same company that sells iPhones without a charging brick, same company that sells a monitor without a stand. Same company that sells a microfiber cloth for an additional $20 if you want one!

You’re using the price of the Vision Pro justify your reasoning for why you think all light seal and headbands would be included. However your logic is flawed and goes against how Apple does business.

This is the light seal. A one piece injected moulded plastic housing with a silicone backing attached. It looks to me that the plastic portion that attaches to the headset is universal and you would insert the different silicone light seal pieces onto that.

I am becoming increasingly skeptical that this requires special "fitting" from a trained Apple Store employee. This is the equivalent of changing different sized earbud pieces to fit in your ear. It's highly unlikely there are more than 4 to choose given that we now know there are only 4 types of face cushions. You will just press and seal whichever fits best of the available sizes.

The fact that Apple wouldn't/won't include these simple silicone backings pieces in the box is absurd. From a logistical perspective of bifurcating the sku as well as a rationale perspective of the overall cost of $3500.

If this was $249 Quest 2, you might sell me on the fact that they would cut corners on margin. The $3500 price already has the multiple seals and cushions built into the price of the entire box kit.

Those 4 sizes are for the cushions, not the light seals. It's very likely the light seals come in similar sizes to match the cushions though.
Thanks for that - lots of interesting info on that account. Based on what they were saying it sounds like there will be multiple light seals cushions in each Apple Vision Pro box, presumably N and N+ or W and W+. You’d get fit for N or W and then have the option of creating more/less distance between your eyes and the lenses with the two Light Seals Cushions that come in the box.

I wonder how many different sizes of the Light Seal there will be… and how they will handle packaging. Can’t wait to find out more.

Also would like to echo the recommendation from above that you refrain from insulting others’ intelligence the way you did… especially over something as trivial as “Light Seals” 😊

… perhaps this is why you need to pick up the VP in store—so Apple doesn’t have to include multiple cushions and light seals in every box with most of them never being used.

I realize you have some terrible aversion to going to Apple Store—people laid out various ways to accomplish this, whether it’s to request a security guard walk you out, pick it up at a different Apple Store, or even have someone else pick it up. Imo, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

Honestly, if the idea of having to pick up the VP in store is the only thing that would stop you from buying the unit you probably shouldn’t buy it in the first place. It sounds like you’d be completely satisfied with another VR from a different manufacturer.

When they demoed the AVP last summer, the people writing reviews said Apple had 12 light seals to choose from.

I had that number in my head but wasn’t sure if I’d made it up. Thanks for the confirmation! A lot of permutations for Light Seal & Light Seal Cushion, then.

No chance in store pickup is mandatory. So many people live quite far away from an Apple Store.

Just let us send in a lidar scan of our face for sizing, what’s so hard about that?

After facial scanning on your iPhone or iPad for pre-order day, Apple will only include:
  • Apple Vision Pro comes with a Solo Knit Band and Dual Loop Band — giving users two options for the fit that works best for them. Apple Vision Pro also includes a Light Seal, two Light Seal Cushions, ........
