Is it fair to assume that there will be at least some limited in-store stock for the AW3 (at least in the more popular colors) on Friday for those who didn't pre-order? Or will it be like the AW0 roll out for a while?

If the order page says "in store pickup" for the particularly model is still available for the 22nd at your location, then you're probably fine. If it says "currently unavailable", then I doubt it.

Best advice, take a look at the Apple site first thing in the morning to check stock. Some models will have stock available for in store pickup, but I guess numbers will be limited.

As I probably should have done before posting this thread I did an online chat with Apple sales and they confirmed that there will be stock on Friday. I work at FedEx and considering how unusually heavy the crates were for them last night I wouldn’t be surprised if some of it is already arriving!

I agree, I'm guessing (hoping) this may be similar to the iPad Air release a few years ago where people were pissed they had a 3-4 week wait on preorders and meanwhile people were coming in and buying their versions that day in the store. (I was one of them!)

Just wait till closer to midnight and it will show in stock in store. It's pretty clear to me that they are trying to create some hype around this. I noticed a pattern of availability from around 12AM PST with almost all watches available in all stores around Southern California, and then about an hour later they all disappear.

They disappear because of reason not because of creating hype. When you see in store availablilty you can purchase it and pick it from that store. Either end-user or hoarders are buying them.

I didn’t think apple would post in store availability the night before a major launch. I figure you will have to wait in line the morning of launch to have any change at getting a watch.

In LA, I originally preordered a 42mm non-lte for store pickup but I changed my mind on LTE so I had been looking for the LTE version and I ended up picking up a second watch right after midnight a few days ago. I want to cancel the first one, but they havent given me the option to yet.

I'd say the disappearing is from new ppl and/or existing ppl changing their mind about color, LTE or band and not wanting to wait the 3-4 weeks shipping.

I'm still not sure about ppl buying to resell/hoard. It might work but I feel like ~9% tax + 15% selling fees is going to make it difficult to sell for a profit.

I think apple has 3 system of selling, online, in-store pickup if product is in stock and in store.
They must have separate stock for the people on launch day who comes first.

Do you have a source for that? I specifically asked about LTE and was told there would be some in stock.

I think that individual is just speculating, they don't know that for sure. There will be stores that will have both models available for purchase. The question really comes down to, is how much availability.

I have in past ridiculed people that line up for store opening on launch date and here I am thinking I will do that for the AW Black Stainless as I did not pre-order !
My store is Sherway Gardens inToronto and they open at 8:00 am. Do I have to line up at some crazy hour ?

If you look at how the in-store pickup system is working, there will be availability in every store and then they all disappear at once.

The limiting factor here is an artificial one, i.e. in-store pickup becomes unavailable because of administrative rather than stock reasons, IMO.

For example, they could be creating hype.

But more likely, they are reaching the limit of pickup slot availability, or are processing pre-orders in batches to ensure they don't oversell.

I would expect some stock of most models in stores for walk-in on Friday, except perhaps the Edition and some of the popular configurations such as the SS with Sport Band.
