I'm going to be purchasing the series 5 within the next couple of days and went through the check out process as if ordering for pickup just for fun. I have a series 4 that I'm trading in, the online checkout process says that I won't be able to trade in my watch at the apple store and that I'll need to send it in using the trade-in kit. People who have bought and traded in watches in-store lately, was that the case for you?

I know when I got my S4 on launch day I traded my S2 in and got credit on the spot, just wondering why the change if so.

Edited to add that I'm going to be purchasing in-store if that changes anything.

They let you trade in the store if you haven’t already initiated a trade online. I did an online order for a phone and found this out. Previously I has traded watches also but now they barely give anything for them so it’s not worth it. Last year traded my s3 for ~230. This year stainless S4 = $110!

Yes, trade in prices for the watch is ridiculous, that’s why I didn’t upgrade to S5 this year.

Me and my wife both had Apple Watch series 4s. Two of our kids asked for an Apple Watch for Christmas so I went and bought 2 series 5 for me
And my wife and am giving them our series 4s. Using the series 5 for a day now and I am really disappointed and don’t see any difference at all. I mean the AOD is nice sometimes but unless you just want to spend the money the upgrade isn’t worth it. In my case it just made sense to upgrade ours and give the kids the old ones. This obviously is just my opinion but I definitely would not trade in aw4 for an aw5.

Exactly! If one already owns a S4 then there’s no reason to upgrade. The Always On display is not worth an upgrade for me either. Especially when Apple is not paying anything reasonable for a S4 trade in.

After setting it up yesterday I even looked for an aw4 to save money but it was only like 40 bucks cheaper so not worth the drive back and doing the return process. If you are coming from a 3 or older then it’s worth it. But not from a 4.

I just upgraded from AW4 aluminum to AW5 stainless. I was offered $100 for trade-in at the Apple Store. I sold my AW4 for $400 on Facebook Marketplace in 1 day. I’m loving the AOD as that’s what I missed most coming from Samsung watches a few years ago.

Exactly! Apple’s trade in value for the watch is ridiculous. Given I’m not on Facebook and don’t really have time to deal with people coming in with low ball offers, I just chose to stick with the S4 until it becomes unusable. By then hopefully I’d feel that I’ve had enough use out of it to discard.

I bought the S5 but kept my S4. After a few days using the S5 buyers remorse hit me. The S5 AOD never was a must have for me and the S5 battery life was much worse than my S4. I returned the S5 and with iOS 13 and watch OS6 my S4 seems new again. So glad I hung on to it.

I don't even bother trading in my Apple products, they barely give you the scrap value. I'd much rather sell my used stuff on eBay or some local marketplace.

If you do the in-store pick up, don't select the trade in option, just do normal check out. Then once you pick it up in store, then do the trade it in that way. That's how I did when I trade my AWS4.

Trading in will of course get you the lowest amount for your watch -- you're handing it to Apple who then hands it to a wholesaler, and they're both getting their margin before the watch resells.

I sold my Series4 SBSS on Swappa for a LOT more than Apple or any of the wholesalers were offering.

Not last year. They had really great trade in prices for AWS3: competitive with services like Swappa. This year not so much.

Yes, for whatever reason last year Apple's trade in offer was higher than I would've expected.

This year their pricing gives me the sense that they don't really want to do trade-ins, so they give a low offer and hope folks will go elsewhere to sell their watch.

For those still figuring out what to do with their watch -- Last I looked, MacMeAnOffer.com had a pretty good offer on an S4 stainless. I've sold several things to them over the years and have always had a good experience, getting exactly what I was offered. Though I've also been completely honest regarding condition too, which not everyone is.
