I have done in store pickup the last two
iPhone launches, each time with devices on the iPhone upgrade program. Both times they have let me bring the trade in back later, as long as it was within 14 days. That said, it's still good to be prepared in case the policy changed, but historically it has been allowed.

Good to know, my store wouldn't. But only did in store once, the rest shipped to home.

I will definitely be asking tomorrow. I’ll even offer to bring back the device same day. I just really like to make sure the new device is set up correctly before wiping the old one. Not that they want me hanging around the store for 45 minutes but that’s my backup plan. Just do it right then and there.

I believe if you select mail in you are locked in. That’s because the credit has already been applied to your order.

If the discount hasn’t been applied, I believe you can ignore the boxes and take it in store within 14 days of receiving the new devices.
That is not true, So if you order online and choose trade in, when picking up at the store tell them your doing a trade in and they will let you trade in at the store.

I have also done iUP past few years. I have always asked to do the trade in later and it’s ever been an issue. Just has to be returned within 14 days.
Wouldn't let me do it this morning. Had to do device to device transfer in store and even they weren't thrilled about it. They wanted me to do an iCloud backup at home but my work apps don't backup to iCloud because they require a profile in which only the device to device transfer works.

Took about 90 minutes with the software update being required. All set up now but wish I could have done it from home.

When I picked up my air today, I told them I want to keep my old phone for now and to send me a trade in kit. I want to have my old phone in case I end up not liking the air and returning it. If I return it, I’d just keep my 16PM cause I don’t care much for the 17PM. They were cool, told me I have two weeks to return it if I decide to do so and came home with both phones. I’m on the iUP. The trade-in kit will come in the mail.

I’m on IUP and requested to turn my phone in at the store this morning, and they wouldn’t accept it stating I would need to come back within 14 days to turn my -6 pro max in.

Huh? They wouldn't take the phone from you right in the store? That makes no sense.

Others are reporting you can return in 14 days to hand back in your old phone to close out your loan for the iPhone Upgrade Program.

I picked up my phone today in-store. I'm on IUP. No issues with the store requiring immediate trade in. I have until 10/9 to bring the old phone back to the store to complete trade-in and close out the loan.

What about people who are not IUP? I think the stores are pretty packed the first few days for them to process the trade in?

I will find out my appointment is in 1 hour and last year they did trade-ins while getting the new devices. So I think they will take them today.

I’m on IUP. No issues doing the trade in later — in and out in under 5 minutes. Also have the option to send the trade in kit via mail, can request via iMessage Apple Support chat. Most likely I will drop off as the Apple Store is relatively closer for me.

if you're just trying to return a phone for a gift card, i wonder if there is a way to make an appointment at a store. i couldn't find anything so i just signed up for battery service on my old phone and will tell the person i just want to trade it in instead. hopefully this works. i figured walking in over the next week or so would be a disaster wait-time wise.

I purchased the new iPhone for home delivery and no trade. Also purchased new watch with in-store pick up and no trade option. Went in, traded/upgraded the watch then traded in the iPhone. No problems except for 1 glitch: you can only add on trade in credit to your balance so i applied the bigger iPhone credit and took a gift card for the watch. I guess you could do the 2 transactions separately to get the 2 credits on your balance but i still need to update my wife’s stuff so will us the gift card then.
