I miss the dock immensely. None of the new features can replace what the dock could do.

Apple fixed a problem that didn't exist in moving control panel over to the side button & eliminating the dock.

And why do away with the dock, anyway? The dock module surely took up little coding space, already existed, and could have easily been triggered some other way. Or as suggested above, allow remapping of the side button so we can decide for ourselves.

Apple: I want my dock back!
Double press the crown my friend, you will have your dock back.

Ah finally they changed grid view to scroll with the crown rather than zoom.

Still useless compared to list view (because grid isn't in any sane order), but baby steps.

It’s all personal opinion, but I arranged my grid view by importance/usefulness, which is a far more useful order for me personally than an unmodifiable alphabetical list.

Yeah I can see how that would work, but its a lot of maintenance overhead whenever you install or remove an app.

Alphabetical may not be perfect, but its zero maintenance on my part.

I rarely use control center. The recent apps list I use all the time. So, naturally, Apple changed that.

Have to double-click the crown now to get the recent app list...and wear out that button, you know, so you have to buy a new watch.

FU Apple!

I rarely use control centre as well, but I also rarely used the dock (recent app list) so for me this thread title should read "side button still useless" (for me).

I just don't understand why Apple can't make the single-press action customisable like the action button is on the Ultra and now also the action button on iPhone 15. For a watch where the screen is so much smaller (fewer icons/tap-targets available on any given screen vs a phone) every physical control that a user can use as a quick way to get to their most often used functionality is valuable and on a device as personal as a watch Apple really shouldn't be making that decision (what a user wants to get to most quickly) itself - let each user decide and program their side button in a way that works best for them.

I use Apple Pay a lot so I'm happy with the double-click action on the side button as it is but I realise there must be others who don't use Apple Pay on their watch much (or at all) so the same argument could (and in my view should) be extended to making the double-click action customisable as well.

For the long-press I can see the argument for not allowing the user to change that since it has some pretty critical functions mapped to it such as medical-ID, SOS and power-off so there is considerable benefit in those always being in a standard place.

For a watch the more things I can set up to be accessed quickly via complications, swipes or physical controls the better so I long for the day when Apple might include an additional button on the opposite side of the case e.g. implement the Ultra's action button in the standard watch as well. On the non-Ultra watch I'd want it flush with the case like the current side button is though, not sticking out as it does on the Ultra, so I suppose there might simply not be enough space inside the standard watch's case to do that without maybe reducing the battery size and compromising battery life. I'd still love for Apple to find a way to do it though.

Ehhh. I highly doubt it is going to wear out that button the way you think it is going too. Haha. I have had my Series 5 now since the day it came out and it works fine. Works just like the day I got it. I don't even look at the battery because I charge it every night and it still lasts all day and my days can be extremely long. But I still have never seen the "Low battery" alert. Anyway...what I am saying is, I really don't think the Button is going to wear out just because you have to double press it now.
You’re lucky. I got my series 5 6 months after it came out. The battery health is at 79%. If i get up at 7 it’s dying around 9pm many times. If im lucky, midnight. Now with OS10 installed it dies by 6pm:rolleyes:

Nothing's worse than not being able to change watch faces with just a swipe.

The left/right swipes have basically been abandoned in the latest UI for watchOS 10. "Pages" of information within apps have been modified to be stacked vertically and scrolled through via up/down swipes or using the crown.

Thanks for the fanboi answers.

"Smart stacks" another pointless feature. That is why complications are there.
You should know by now Apple ran out of ideas years ago. Look at iPad OS, you've now got widgets on the Lock Screen, widgets on the Home Screen, widgets you slide in from the left with a gesture. Convoluted mess lol. They genuinely think people care so much for the weather they need it on every screen they browse.

Press and hold an icon to rearrange. I have it in descending order of importance. ie useless walkie talkie at the bottom.
I actually prefer this to list view now, less scrolling req’d. Never a fan of the honeycomb thingy.

Probably because you couldn't go left/right with the Digital Crown. They redid the UI to be able to be used as much as possible without touching the screen. Which also ties in nicely with the doubletap thing on S9/U2

Or arrange the apps on the phone app on a bigger screen.

I can search settings for Dock but none of the results will open any settings. I was trying to see if I could limit Dock to just favorites, like before.

I used to have photos as my only Dock favorite. And the only photos were my barcodes to scan (gym, Library, etc). It was handy to have one push access to those without having to select an app from a grid or list.

It seems in this case Apple have been able to frustrate both you as a non-regular user of control centre and me as someone who uses it almost every day.

Sadly I did not take part in the beta this year even though I had access to it.

Had I done so, I would definitely have made this point during the programme for the development of watchOS 10.

You would have been shouting into the wind. The only times Apple has reversed course on something following serious beta pushback was forcing the Safari navbar to be at the bottom.

Huh. I didn't know that was the new way to do that. So thanks for that info!
Same. [edit. I need to re-read user guide, which calls it App Switcher.] When I cleared them all out, it’s reads, “Recently used apps appear here.” Fingers crossed it gets more options.

Hmm. I see your point of view. I used to be similar, and hated the old app view. But I’m ok with using app view in grid view and manually sorting by importance to me. It’s still one button push and one tap away, but it’s a smaller tap area than favorites dock was.

One other very similar option would be to set up Photos in the widgets launcher and set that up to the top of widgets. One swipe up and one tap, but with caveat of having to pin that widget first.

There’s now a shortcut action to specify which….umm…collection?…so you could use a shortcut that opens a specific album in photos that has your gym images. In case you wanted to use Photos for other things, too.

Just some thoughts…

Thanks for that. I have the Ultra, so that shortcut might be a good use for the Action button.

But only recently used. No favorite customization.
They're trying to shift people over to using widgets to launch apps, the only issue with that is there's no guarantee your favourites apps will have a widget. Unless they allow an arbitrary icon as a makeshift widget?

I love all the changes to watchOS 10. I like the new grid view layout, I like that a single push on the side button brings up control center (use every night to activate sleep mode), and on the Ultra, one the nicest features is making Night Mode automatic. All in all, a nice update. Plus the fact Apple shockingly allows the Ultra to use the new Modular face on the Ultra 2, as part of the watchOS 10 update is cool.

I don't think anybody else has mentioned it yet but the other downgrade with this update is that the dock that you can access through double clicking the crown is now only recently used apps. There is no longer an option in settings to have the dock be favorites. The Dock option in settings has been removed. Why, Apple?

WatchOS 10 has been 2 steps backwards for me. In fact, the only positive in this upgrade for me is the new Modular Ultra watch face.
