Mmmm, the difference in price for you is a lot less than it is here. Here, The 2005FPW comes down to $370-400, whereas, even with educational discounting, Apple's 20" is $699. So I guess that, while the price of the Apple is comparable here and there, the Dell is substantially cheaper here.

Eizo makes excellent panels

I can only second this. As proud owner of a (free :D ) Eizo 21" widescreen monitor I must say that the quality of this thing still surprises me. It's a little more expensive than the apple 20" but in terms of picture quality, brightness and calibration it blows both the apple and the dell displays away. A friend of mine has the dell 20 incher and we got a 20" acd at the agency and if I compare them to what I'm used to at home the colours look almost dull. It's like putting a powerbook screen next to an acd. Really big difference. If you got the money I'd recomend the Eizo over both dell and apple monitors, you won't be disappointed. Plus Eizo gives you 5 years warranty!

I have the Dell 2005fpw and I love it; I got it for about $390, but unfortunately the great coupon deals with Dell don't seem to be available in the UK. Here the Dell comes in at less than hald of the price of the Apple 20", but in the UK it looks like the Dell costs almost as much as the Apple display. I would say at 1/2 the price the Dell simply can't be beat, esp. with its extra inputs, but if they were almost the same price I might go with the Apple instead simply for the looks, unless I really needed the extra inputs (I'm currently using the DVI and S-video inputs).

I have to also recommend the Dell 2005FWP. A really nice monitor with a large screen size, multiple inputs, and is very cost effective versus Apple's displays. There hasn't been a hot sale on these for a while, but keep looking, there should be one soon. Keep tabs on some of the deal sites like fatwallet to be current with the latest deals. Good luck.

I gotta say, EIZO

I gotta say, the EIZO's are nice, I still have the first LCD we ever had from over seven years ago. A 20" EIZO that still displays just beautiful colors and brightness.

you don't even want to KNOW how much it was back then, fortunatly I didn't have to pay for it. I'll just say it was more than all our current computers combined$ Strange company I worked for then!

Low end DELL, etc. monitors + 12" pb??

My BF has a 12" powerbook and really needs an external monitor so he can clamshell it and not have to look down into the screen.
I'm thinking of getting something like this:
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sys/134400577.html
(Dell E176FP Flat Panel Monitor)

or this
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sys/134684205.html

Samsung SyncMaster 710N

Can he use this type of monitor with his pb,
and if he needs a converter what sort does he need? I have my 15" pb plugged right in to my Apple 20" aluminum screen, no AVI cable necessary but I think most other ones require something like that?

He isnt doing graphics or anything that requires precision so I'm hoping this is a good deal on a basic flat screen monitor, as I'm on a budget.

thanks for any advice

Yeah for the 12" PowerBook you need a mini-DVI to VGA for the Samsung 710n or the Dell E176FP. Both monitors you listed are "analog" which means VGA. Since you're on a budget, I don't think you could afford digital monitor, which is DVI.

I use two 19" Dell Ultra Sharps on my powermac G5, they are amazing, aparently they outperform the Mac monitors, or so i read in another post, right now they are 349, but they were like 313 a week ago, dell always has offers on their website, i love mine, big clear screen, or two rather, and height adjustable, as well as swivel and tilt, they come with a speaker bar if you wish to use it, though i have my system hooked up to a shelf stereo system.

Hmmm...maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, but I haven't been able to find a Dell 2005FPW for under about $420.:( It looks like a great monitor though...I've heard that Samsungs are really nice, too.

hope this thread is in the right place.

basically, i'm using an intel iMac at the moment, and have it hooked up to a cheap 17" PC world TFT.

In september (if they've been released) I will be upgrading to an "intel powermac" and as this is the first time i've had to think about buying a complete new monitor I though it best to ask the experts...

I want to pick up an Apple monitor to go with it, but it's possible I won't have the cash at the time, so I was wondering, can you reccomend a monitor?
I've no idea when it comes to them (I only just got over CRT to flat screens, now there's TFT LCD HD ECT!)

so, what monitor do you use? how much does it retail for and how do you rate it?

P.S. not sure if it matters, but i'm based in the UK (I'm assuming that most monitors are available here as well as the good ol US of A)

cheers....
We run 2 dell 2405s and 2 2005s here and we are very pleased with them. We calibrate them often and use them for photography / print / web work.

Great value for money

The prices have been pretty high lately. They dropped to $398 last week for less than a day. I've looked into it; it appears that the prices drop at the end of the quarter, which for Dell should be the end of this month. I'd like to grab one in the $325 range which is what they were going for just after Thanksgiving I believe (and numerous times before that).

ibook with bigger displays? anybody using this combo??

It took me two passes on my iMac and iBook, each, to be happy with them as well.

Are you absolutely sure it works with iBook (good enough quality) because it has only VGA capability. Also what is resolution you are running on?

I am not sure about iBook with bigger monitors. I hooked it to my 20" Viewsonic CRT monitor and it was ugli....same i huge window per screen (on max resolution).

Can it be same as a mac mini or powerbook hooked to a 20" or bigger display??
i.e more number of windows to work with.

Doesn't the 12" PowerBook come with this?

We just got this 19" Samsung 940MW for $599. It's combo screen (1440x900) and HD TV. It's a really good screen, contrast is 700:1, and light 300 cd/m2. There's both DVI, VGA, SCART, S-video and a remote. We got it both to get a cheap HD TV, and a good large monitor (19" Widescreen for 600 big ones, and still a HD TV). I know it's more expensive than the Dell things, but response is also good: 8 ms.:D :D :D
