not sure how old this video is, but gmail stopped scanning email for ads last year:

Gmail, released in 2005 finally stopped scanning everyone's emails in 2017. WOW.

i'm pretty sure 12 years of someone's email history is probably good enough to get an idea of what kinds of ads to show them.

So basically you won’t have that annoying red dot on the app icon telling you that you have an unread message ?

I might be interested in the app then because Gmail still doesn’t have this feature in 2018.

As I said - IF YOU USE GOOGLE’s OWN APPS, THEY DONT READ YOUR MAIL. but if use a 3rd party app like spark or airmail with your gmail, all bets are off.
