Take a look at the North Face Surge. It has a laptop compartment, and it looks like any other NF backpack that anybody would use. Nothing about it screams "laptop inside," but it's very well set up (including the other compartments) for transporting a laptop and accessories. There's room for my 17" MBP, even in a Booq sleeve. It's a very effective bag and, as I said, very stealthy.

Is the inside smooth or would I need a sleeve to go with the bag?

Smooth, so you don't need one. Mine mostly goes in overhead compartments, so I wanted that little extra protection. When I'm just tossing it in the car to go someplace, I don't bother with the sleeve.

I agree with the North Face Recon. Well I would until the puppy chewed through one of the straps...

So, I spent a year going from one bag to the next, finally I came across a Timbuk2 Outtawack bag, the price was right and I'm super impressed! It looks small, but it is very well designed, and holds a ton of stuff. Your lappy will be very well protected.

It is very inconspicuous and rides tight to the body like a backpack. Actually, it has backpack straps as well...

My only complaint is that it doesn't have a water bottle sleeve... :) But I'll live.

It really is a Great bag! Take a look!

I agree, and...

I have one of these and it is awesome. I throw it in an old backpack, and it is pristine after nearly 2 years.

I'm looking for a backpack for a 13" MBP. I'd like something that'll keep the MBP safe from dents and scratches but not bring a lot of attention to me. I really don't feel like being robbed :). I take the train to class everyday and I live in Chicago so a discreet bag is a must. Any suggestions?

Helpful Thread

This thread turned out very helpful to me, as I'm in search of a laptop bag too for my new notebook. I travel a lot with it so naturally I want it safely tucked whenever I'm in transit. Thanks for the advice, guys.

Have a look at STM products. they do a wide range of computer bags, from courier typebags, to backpacks and wheeled bags.
I have an STM backpack, that has a special padded compartment that can take up to a 17" MBP.

Just buy a cheap backpack and cut a custom foam sleeve for your macbook. They sell squishy foam at walmart in the sewing section. Its meant for padding in stools and pillows and whatnot, but you can use it to protect your laptop. If you want to go the extra mile find a 3-ring binder and gut it, then pad the inside with foam and use this for your macbook. It will protect it and wont attract any attention (unless someone thinks you are odd for using paper in a binder, but who would steal that?).
