DRM-free? Is Steve Jobs living up to his words?

Since this new addition to iTunes is an independant, is Steve putting his money where his mouth is and making this content available WITHOUT DRM??? It would be nice to see Steve act on his words, where he can - and this like a place where he can since he is dealing directly with the independant.

If this content id DRM-ed then - NO THANKS! I will not buy any more DRM - especially after Steve's "Thoughts on Music" letter.

downloaded it

Just got it.
It's my first iTunes purchase, and glad that it's from an independent production.
This is much more a symbollic purchase, although i'd have to say the video makes me wish i was back at Blackcomb/Whistler again. :)

Independent music on itunes... not new

This could potentially great news for independent film/video creators. BUT I'm really confused by the comment at the end of the article:

"it could also open up the possibility for Apple to distribute independent music -- bypassing traditional record labels altogether."

You guys are usually so on top of things, but that's a ridiculous thing to say. There are several avenues for independent artists to get into iTunes, and there have been for quite some time, regardless of whether they are affiliated with a label.

Here's a great example of an artist, TriangleMan, who has been on the store for over a year, and has no label affiliation whatsoever:

(in case the long one gets cut off)

Actually this isn't true, this isn't the first product on itunes that is independent.

My company Mediastile has distributed short films from sundance to itunes. These are as independent as you can get. and we did this before this film came online.

Just in time for my projects to come to fruition.
I have stuff I produced/wrote/recorded/master/did everything but sing, up on itunes (Kyria - Whispers In The Dark) and emusic, and a bunch of other places... no label intervention at all...
Now, to get a chance at video distribution would be great!
Can not wait!

iTunes the new youtube?

It'd be amazing if ppl could post their own stuff up on iTunes, and get paid a fee for each DL... kinda like a YouTube, that you made money off of :D:D

Does anyone already know Tunecore?

The big 4 will go down. I can feel it.

Dave

tunecore seems cool but i have friends with experience with cdbaby and it seems much better to me...
no annual fee
smaller cut
they also warehouse and distribute your physical discs
they create a website to help market your cd
no uploading...you just send them the cd and they do it all
check them out. www.cdbaby.com

Can you publish independent stuff in HD? I wonder if this is the real use of the :apple: tv. Kind of like HD quality youtube for your TV?

I've worked with CD baby in the past and I believe the Tunecore cut for iTunes is less, so the artists get more. Also for bands that want to control their own distribution, CD baby is not necessary. My experiences with online CD distributors in the past was not good... many of them fail to notify you in time when your CDs are out of stock, and are just a pain in the ass overall. I guess it's less work than doing it yourself, but I really didn't mind going to the post office every day since it was right around the corner from where I lived. To each his own.

No...the people in "THAT" are Pro snowboarders, its not like jimmy bob boy snowboarding in his backyard or at his local **** mountain. The prodcution values of "THAT" and some of the other snowboard videos(www.mackdawgproductions.com) are crazy, they are filming at least 100 days out of the year, the huge resorts close stuff down for them to film on their stuff, Forum has to pay 25 people full time, pay for them to travel all around the world and snowboard.

Calling this video independent isn't entirely true, but comparing this to YouTube is just rude.

even if it's a big production it's still "independent"

chromedome-
if it's produced outside the major hollywood studio system, it's considered "independent"... no matter how elaborate or expensive the production was.

same is true with music... the only requirement is that it's something not released by one of the "Big 4"... even if it's distributed by one of them it still fits in the "independent" category.

it's a broad category either way.

I certainly hope not!

I agree with you entirely, eventually more and more independent films and other studios will be adding their content. Movies will follow the same trend as TV shows.

I certainly hope not!

I'm sure Sundance doesn't give carte blanch to every single indie film that comes it's way. I'm sure there is some guideline regarding artistic and entertainment value. It's bad enough that the major labels and producers in Hollywood green light stuff that should have never seen the light of day and are a waste of fine celluloid. The same goes to the major recording labels.

I'd hate to see it become like cable tv. You know, cable tv, where there are 250+ channels to fill and yet there is nothing on. You know, where you pass by shows like the 'reality tv" of The Simple Life, Big Brother, The Osbournes, Road Rules, Hulk Hogan and family, Jessica Simpson and whoever she was married to, etc., etc., etc.

Yeah, now that's entertainment! Blah!!

Cable tv has 250+ channels to fill, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and fill it they do with everything under the sun, to the point where I got rid of the premium package channels and then the extra channels and went with basic local channels and the bottom tier of cable programming. And even still, I wish there was a "a la carte" to pick and choose and pay accordingly so I can reduce my choices even further to the point of knowing I am going to veiw channels who's content I know I am going to appreciate.

Now I know, my tastes are not your tastes and your tastes are not someone else's tastes and I know I'm not paying a monthly subscription - THANK GOD to get on ITMS only to be disappointed by the ever increasing so called "content". I'm just saying don't bloat the ITMS because you can. Don't increase servers to hold content just to hold content. If you fill those servers with everything under the sun it then becomes like the 250+ channels of cable tv, you know, "where there's nothing on"! :(
