InDesign CS5 dropper tool not working correctly with text

The dropper tool in indesign CS5 suddenly is not working correctly with text, it seems to put a black outline around text rather than applying the desired text attributes originally selected. Please can someone advise how I can get this working properly again? I have tried restarting the program, computer etc but nothing seems to work. I am working on OSX 10.67.
