Is there a way to control the transparency of the fill colour of individual cells in a table in InDesign?

    Yes, under cell options.

Thanks but I was aware of cell options. I'd like to adjust the transparency rather than the tint of the background colour so I can partially see through to objects behind the cell.

This may work for your application...

    1) 'No Fill' for the cells in your table.
    2) Then create another object (rectangle tool if your table is rectangular)with the fill color that you want.
    3) apply the transparency to this object.
    4) Place this object between your table and your background image.

Adjusting the percentage of cell tint has the same effect.

You can also adjust the transparency of the entire table using the effects menu.
