This is definitely just a political ploy and not the Indian government being concerned with the privacy of its citizens.

None of the apps they are banning are from Indian companies. Are they saying that there are no apps from India companies that harvest data as some of the apps that they purportedly say harvest data of their citizens?

Why not ban the app that is the most flagrant violator of them all, Facebook? Is it because Modi and Trump are buddy buddy, so that one could slide?

Just call it what it is.

Please post some balanced views instead of far leftist drivel.
Ok, then just raw numbers.

Oh come on. You know that's not true. They never said there would be no apps or App Store. The iPhone launched with apps! But the platform did not yet support developers... that took a bit longer, because it was a brand new venture, new technology.
How quick you forget. Go watch the old WWDC and hear it straight from Steve Jobs.

Banning specific apps with a vague reason is a pretty bad way to go at it. There will always be apps that will take the place of the banned ones that do the same thing. Also, since this is mainly banning Chinese apps it’s likely this order stems much more from economic protectionism and retaliation than actual concern for user data. India needs a common standard in the law like GDPR so developers are aware of a standard they need to follow.

Agree. I also think that China is the new Cold War Russia in the US and anything China is instantly dismissed as bad, for nothing more than chalk marks on the board in the lead up to the election.

Yeah, I hope they can sort it out somehow, but things does not look very bright at the moment.

I couldn’t get to see the FT site as it requires subscription. India has to be a Hindu nation with vast majority are Hindus. Muslims wanted separate nation (historically there was no Muslim nation just as there was no Hindu nation per se) and got TWO (Pakistan & Bangladesh).

India will not be a Hindu nation but will definitely be Hindutva nation (Cultural nationalism including all religions without reporting authorities outside of India to manipulate them with money etc...).

There is absolutely nothing wrong in it!

So much for the so-called democracy in India. So much for a "free country". 😂

A clan-and-caste-based society is not a free and democratic society. It sounds a lot like a toxic and backward tribe.

We have first nation issues. You know the schools, etc.

Exactly my thought. A democratic society does not mix civil activities with political agendas. Depriving lawfully operating companies of proper legal rights with executive orders and government mandates are the exact behaviour of a dictatorial government.

Things between India and China are tense. Modi's government will likely ban a lot of Chinese apps.
They can't really afford to. The Chinese are running the Indian economy online and offline. They serve as the technological and financial backbone.

Indian GDP so far this year is around negative 25%, worst in the world.

I am glad to see India taking a proactive stance on privacy / data harvesting issues. I am not a beta tester so I have not personally seen the new privacy features in iOS 14 but I am looking forward using them in the very near future. I take my privacy seriously but I feel like I am in the minority, too many people have the attitude that "I have nothing to hide" and they do not realize the risks associated with leaking even seemingly harmless personal data all over the Internet.
Agreed with the sentiment on the privacy matter. Here on macrumors someone introduced the phrase: “saying that losing privacy is ok because I got nothing to hide is similar to saying that losing free speech is ok because I got nothing to say”.

Nevertheless, in this case, I don’t know much about an actual underlying agenda... India has run things like demolition of houses, genital sterilization campaigns for poor men and other politically driven decisions for perceived Estate threats and emergencies.

Certainly following West doesn’t make one forward or non toxic either! True democracy and freedom must have choices that need not make me like your community or society etc...India is far superior in that! They even allowed an Italian lady ex-bartender to be the permanent chief of the main opposition party! You can’t be more forward (rather stupid as well) than Indians to prove the west that they are truly democratic and free society 🤣🤣🤣
