Apple should have changed to a USB-C connector long ago. If they feared the features, they could disarm them so it does nothing but charge. By time Apple gets everything on USB-C, they will have USB-D!
Can not happen since the legislation explicitly states USB-C must be used and nothing else.

Wouldnt create even more waste, since those rules makes everything else prior incompatible? Considering customers who only upgrade their phone every 3-4 years...
yep millions of cables and accessories made useless will create more waste and cost people money to replace

Pretty sure lighting was designed with strength in mind hence its a solid piece.
I hate how usb c has that thin sliver inside the port. It’s just asking to break over time.
This is what bothers me as well; the thin piece in the middle of a USB-C port is perfectly fine on a laptop or desktop, but it seems like it's just asking to either get broken or stuff stuck in it on a device that spends its life in your pocket.

I hope to be proven wrong, though.

So India is gonna force them to do something they’re already planning to do? 😂

It’s coming, people, deep breaths. This obsession with usb-c might put some of y’all in therapy. I’ve never seen anything like it.

People struggling in the world with real problems and then you have iPhone users worried about a port for charging and data transfer. Like this will make everything right in the world cause all their ports will match and be universal.

The madness must stop. I have usb-c on my iPP and not once have I thought, gee, I REALLY need this on my iPhone. I’ll roll with the change when it comes, but I love the durability of the lightning cable/port.

but smartphone manufacturers should also be forced to make batteries switchable again.

Sure. Take out your old flip phone and see how much space is needed for the battery enclosure, the phones back cover, the phones internal cover (between battery compartment and the phones's inside) and compare that to the size of the actual cells inside the battery.

So user replaceable batteries are a nogo, making it easier for a qualified shop (or the user at his own risk) to switch them is a different matter.

As for USB-C being fragile, Apple was on the board making that fr###ing design and them the just ignored it. Lightning should have died 5 years ago.

Already proven on millions of devices worldwide

The port was production tested for durability (it's in the specs co-written by Apple)

How long did you have that MacBook? I've heard a lot about how USB-C may loosen but not anything particularly specific.
5.5 years. Just replaced it with a M2 MBA. I didn't use that machine much and was gentle with it when I did.

When I plugged the same USB-C cable into the new MBA I had been using with the old Pro and it held firm, I realized just how worn-out those ports can get.

No, India is going to force them to do something just like the enforcement that started rolling in other countries worldwide, Apple even publicly fought against it. Remember they are not part of EU nor of the US, so EU-DMA, EU-DSA, EU-RightToRepair and the upcoming Bipartisan US Bills won’t “officially” take place in India.

I knew people would start saying that Apple is gently moving to USB-C purely by self motivation. Waiting for the day to read the same about downloadable Apps, sideloading and alternative AppStores. That day Apple probably will have invented the download and installation of Software.

Why don’t Apple just pull the trigger and add USB-C to the iPhone 14? The Lightning port is not a selling point, in fact, I won’t buy the iPhone 14 if it has a Lightning port.

Lightning connectors are far more mechanically robust and more durable than USB-C connectors. That's important for devices that are going to be charged every day - connected and unconnected every day (or more often).

USB-C is great for connecting peripherals to computers that do not get frequently connected/unconnected and require high bandwidth. For example; a Mac Studio driving displays, disk drives, etc - ie devices that will be unconnected/reconnected far less frequently that a phone and charger that requires greater durability.

I’ve had usb-c on android for years. Haven’t personally had issues unlike my husband (iPhone owner) who has had to use a paper clip to dig lint out of the lightening port on his iPhone so it would charge.

iPads are all switching to usb-c, and we haven’t heard mass complaints there either.

I’m on iPhone now too (so not hating on it) but life would be better if I didn’t have to worry about losing the one lightening to usb-c cable we have vs the many many usb-c cables we have for our MacBooks.

Well, lightning lasted for a decade like the thirty pin connector did and as it was advertised by
Phil Schiller in 2012 here at 25:15

Apple could be forced to use a USB-C port for much longer than it is usable if required by law.
And the wheels of legislation grind very, very slowly, as we can see.

I agree with the concept of a "common port" in order to cut down on electronic waste (fewer cables for example.)

I have concerns about USB-C port durability though... My 2016 MBP's ports, by the time I sold it the cables would almost fall out of the sockets. And I didn't use them much apart from charging.

I wish Lightning could be upgraded to match the power delivery & transfer speeds USB-C can offer. It seems a lot more durable.
I heard the issue with high power delivery comes from the exposed pins, which causes a safety issue.

Also, in the past, lightning was only one-sided (in terms of data pin); not sure if it is still the case.

USB-C often lose their snap due to lint going into the connector; I "saved" multiple devices with a simple can of compressed air
