Sadly a country, where more people have access to mobile phones, than toilets.

Or clean running water.
[doublepost=1455641652][/doublepost]
If apple was smart they offer an iOS lite for these phones.

Apple is a business, why is a smart move for them to make zero profit. And please don't state that they afford it. They are a business first and foremost.

Development shouldn't be single dimensional but multi-dimensional.
This government is on its track to put things together and increase employment in the country.

For a country that was in deep **** for more than 60+ years of congress Party rule, these guys are doing a much better job. We also need to consider how chaotic it is to deal with a country 1/3 the size of United States of America but 3 times the size of US population. The challenges are many fold but working towards it and achieving success from its failures will what a make a country bright and true global cities...

And for many who are ignorant about how complex India, let me try putting it here...

1. It has 18 official languages with Hindi and English as its official Federal languages
2. Every state in India has its own language (Unlike dialects) and thousands of dialects spoken in every district and county level.
3. To give an understanding of how important these languages are - 7 of 20 largest spoken languages in the world are spoken in India and its their mother tongue...
4. The geography is extremely different from one state to the other.
5. And to top it off, there are many religions and deep rooted castes.
6. Out of its 1.3 Billion people, there are 400 Million people living its cities and urban centers. That's 120% of US population living in cities.

There are many things that I can go about this fascinating country and its complex structure. No country which speaks 2 or more majority speaking languages has survived without skirmishes and its own problems. Now you just need to think how big a head ache it is for the State and Federal Governments to run this country with such diversity and a feeling of togetherness under a single code and still be a democracy... To me its no ordinary feet but something beyond extraordinary... :)

So to drive a business and provide a robust environment for business, trade and economy, the Indian government is doing its every bit and with it comes its fair share of failures and success which the people understand and take it in their stride...

And to say the least, India is a free country which has a successful democracy where every one can voice their opinions for and against the government without loosing their head. On the other hand, China might have had its successes but at the cost of democracy and freedom is never worth it... :)

Just like the Singapore Statesman - Lee Kwan Yew said - 'I was trying to create, in a third world situation, a first world oasis'. Hope the same holds for India as well but with its sheer size and diversity it will take time... Just hang in there...

Will they come unlocked? Rose Gold version? Can people get one on a 2yr contract?

Lol - the government of India does not assist the people - more like their own pockets.
"Lol" then how? They eat the cost of the hardware because they love other Indians? I would assume since they are part of the "made in India" campaign that prob the government has given the company funds to subsidy it? That doesn't mean they can't assist their pockets at the same time though. Have seen programs for backpacks for kids in Latin America where they give them for free and are ****** quality $5 ones yet the gov says they cost $40 each.

It's called android.

With the amount of government participation in the launch of the product, the preponderance of evidence suggests government subsidy.
http://www.smartcritique.com/freedom-251-indias-cheapest-smartphone-for-just-inr-500/

Most relevant portion: "Ringing Bells is a Noida-based company and has named this smartphone Freedom 251, which is being launched on 17th February, tomorrow. Apparently, the device will be unveiled by the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, while the Member of Parliament Murali Manohar Joshi is expected to preside over the event. The price of the phone stands as a testimony to the vision of India’s government under the leadership of Narendra Modi, which is to ‘empower India to the last person’. The phone is supported by the central government as its part of Make in India and Digital India initiatives."

Definitive? No. Likely assumption? I'd say so.

Fair enough. Thank you for this link.
In India getting "VIPs" to launch your product is pretty common (especially when touting "Made in India" so I personally dont find this article any more "likely" towards a subsidy. But that isn't a big deal either way. Time might tell more. Appreciate your follow up.

[doublepost=1455652669][/doublepost]How about $ 7 phones, FREE condoms and less Kamasutra?

Their problem is clear: stop making babies, your country is FULL many times over!

Now, if any government would get it into their heads to educate people and show them how much damage overpopulation does to the world we'd all benefit.

Bill Burr has it right:

You are right and the government is doing it...
If you look at the population explosion in India, it has gone down over the last fifteen years where as the number of people who were pulled out of poverty is is also increasing.

You see phones are mere fun pieces from a 1st world perspective.
But look at digital revolution as a way to educate and elevate people out of poverty.

The more people who has access to technology, the more it inspires them to know about the civilized world. The more they know about the civilized world, the more it helps them to understand, educate and eliminate the necessary evils. Everything is interconnected. Dont have a single dimensional approach...

And BTW, Bill Burr? Seriously? Everyone knows that he is politically most ignorant stand up comedian!
Anyways, I am not here to change a person's opinion but just share the other side of the story... :)

[doublepost=1455656540][/doublepost]I am not just writing about India. All the countries with overpopulation have the same issue.

To see the true results of stopping overpopulation may be hundreds of years away.

Even USA, although they have the benefit that the landmass is big. Fact is the planet is full and there cannot be enough jobs for everybody to make a living.
That is why we are trying to figure out how to locate to space.
We are using up resources faster than they can be replenished and since we displace other species, we are making animals extinct and cut down forests which in turn changes climates, weather, harvests etc.etc.

Add the increased life spans per person and you can see that it's an endless spiral and it can only be stopped with less humans, but that will never happen.

Add religious beliefs on top of that and again, more people.

My reference to Bill Burr is just that his take strikes ME as funny and he does have a point. As a comedian he should not be taken seriously. On top of that I don't do politically correct.

Agreed!

Well, my au$17 Nokia feature phone works just fine, so this Indian version may well be quite serviceable for the vast majority, who only need to keep in touch/handle emergencies.

For reference, here's their $44 smartphone:

2016_ringing_bell_44usd.png

  • 1.3 GHz quad core CPU running Android Lollipop
  • 1GB RAM, 8GB FLASH with slot to add 32GB card
  • 5" IPS display 960x480
  • 8 MP rear camera w/flash, 3.2 MP front
  • Wifi, BT, GPS, motion sensors
  • GSM / HSPA / LTE
  • 2800 mAh battery
Everything electronic drops in price over time. Remember $1000 microwaves, digital cameras, CD and DVD players? Now they can be had for $44, too.

Still, $7 would be really inexpensive. Yet it would not be surprising if it had some specs better than the first iPhone nine years ago. E.g. at least 3G.

Just last month, Apple sent an application to the country's Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) for approval of several planned retail outlets in India, in which less than one third of the population uses smartphones.

That's a very smart population. Unfortunately they won't be left alone by the globalists.

The biggest illusion on this planet at the moment is to measure quality of life in terms of technological and echonomical "advancement".

And in some cases you're paying way too much.

And sometimes cheaper isn't cheaper. How about the oldie but goodie, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Sometimes I pee off the deck, just for the fun of it.

It is sad that you felt it was necessary to post that bit of information. But then people reveal who they really are when they don't even know it.

The phone will also send CV's claiming it is a uber master expert in networking, programming, all business processes, SAP, Oracle, and People Soft.

I am sad that I made you sad.
I will give up peeing off the deck for the rest of Lent.

Don't look now... Apple has yet another competitor, like it or not. Worldwide Market Dynamics are backing Apple into a corner. Denial is no longer effective.

I don’t see what all the fuss is, it’s a disposable phone, made with the cheapest labor, cheapest parts, and not made to last.
What part of the iPhone is made to last, is it the user replaceable parts like the display or battery? Is it the option to use additional storage like an SD card so once the internal chips die it can carry on living from that? What about the ability to redownload apps that have been removed from the store, ensuring the apps purchased to work on a non-updating device will work indefinitely?

Would I buy one, perhaps if I needed a phone and I made only a few dollars a week, but i am fortunate and I can afford slightly better things these days...
Good lord.

You are right, but what your implying is really ridiculous. Ofcourse there are more people in the country who can afford to spend 251 rupees on a phone than those who can afford toilets.
The people who can't afford toilets generally can't afford a house and would not be able to buy a mobile phone even if it costs 100 rupees.
Also both are different realities. Actually there are many people who have a phone but don't even own a house and use public toilets many a times. Because it takes more than even 500 rupees(the cost of a chinese phone) to make a toilet and it takes more than the cost of a mid range phone to build a toilet. because it needs land in some places its costlier than an Iphone to build a toilet.

So stop this nonsense you seem like a Modi Hater don't get politics into this. Atleast this govt has built more toilets than any other govt in the past and in the next few years everyone will have access to toilets. THEY DON"T EVEN HAVE TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT! Modi is giving it to them for free. JEEZ!!

Seriously Bill Burr is talking about dumb Americans. Its the reason Indians are going there and inventing ****.
Our country is not making babies. that is the biggest myth.
The real people making babies the most are White people.
You should look up history. Australia, America, Canada are not the land of White people. They just murdered the indigenous population occupied it. Most of europe was unoccupied. They just occupied everything . All of the white people in the primarily white countries and the ones like South africa and Zimbabwe are the biggest population world wide. The only thing is we don't take them as a country.

you know that american and most white people also have 6 to 10 babies right. Even in this day and age they are having 4 babies.
Its is only in the last 50 years have they stopped making babies. They made babies and occupied the best lands and then they blame everyone.

Indians have been in India for so may years if we Indians had reproduced like the europeans India would not be enough.
