My daughter (8 years old) wants to buy an mp3 player. The cheapest iPod is out of her price range, so I'm looking for any suggestions on a decent mp3 player for under $30. Anyone have experience with any you'd like to recommend?

Take a look at the Sansa Clip. Drag and drop MP3 support over on the OS X side

Today, right now at woot.com, sansa for $25. I think it's a 4gb w/ video. Great site. I've bought from them several times.

If you do elect for the sansa on woot, know that the woot will end at midnight CST.

I would recommend anything Creative makes. Before switching to an iPod, I was a huge Creative fan. They make fantastic products, all of which have amazing sound quality. The low-end model may be out of your price range, but they are very durable, which is good for a youngster.
