Infiniti adding Carplay and dropping CVTs -- now they need to fix everything else.
But they are switching to the horrible 9-speed ZF tranny which is something what for instance Acura/Honda used and everyone complained to the point that Acura/Honda ditched it and developed their own 10 speed that is 10x better. They have been lagging for a while and it seems like that will continue.

Meanwhile Audi would tell me, "you're welcome to buy our Prestige trim next time for an additional $6000 if you prefer wireless CarPlay."
What model year do you have? Wireless CarPlay has been standard equipment on all trims since MY 2020. It wasn't available prior to that.

The issue is that Infiniti decided a few years ago to become "Nissan-plus" (upmarket Nissans) instead of a Audi/BMW/Mercedes competitor.

I have a 2021 premium plus and I have wireless CarPlay (which wasn’t an add-on). I’m in the US, so if you’re elsewhere maybe it’s different…?

On a separate note, how is Infiniti still in business? Their cars are rubbish, and the technology in them is absolutely archaic. The cruise control doesn’t even have DOWNHILL speed control! For a similar price you can get a well appointed Audi that feels like something from the 21st century.

'22 Premium here, no wireless CarPlay or Qi charging mat.

Thanks for the tip, but not interested in Audi. (used to call them ouch-di)

That's because of the semiconductor shortage; you're not the only one. Audi has said that "depending on component availability" the Audi Phone box (needed for wireless charging and wireless CarPlay) may not be available. However, it is listed as standard equipment on all 2020+ models. Was your car discounted to reflect the absence of that feature? Most people are getting discount of a few hundred dollars or some bonus thrown in to make up for the missing features.

I wish Toyota would follow suit.
Toyota/Lexus please!!

It seems strange to own a 2021 ES 350, and it doesn’t have wireless CarPlay. In fact, where you need to plug in the phone, 1) if you have a right angle cable, it goes the wrong way, and 2) unless you take your phone out of the case and drop it in the little slot (perfect for cracking your screen), it takes up the 2nd cup holder. I love my car, but this aspect annoys the heck outta me. #firstworldproblems

eta: yet it does have a wireless charging pad…. Go figure

my 2017 Honda Civic has wifi and Bluetooth, no reason they couldn't do this as well but they never will
I have a 2020 CR-V with WiFi and Bluetooth as well and this would be nice but Honda will never offer this. I believe my 2020 CR-V still has the same terrible infotainment that your Civic has. It’s truly awful. I only use CarPlay in my car.

Yeah, my wired CarPlay in the Toyota is seriously annoying. Sometimes when I plug in it will detect CarPlay fairly quickly. At other times, it will just sit there issuing a chime every few seconds while it tries to connect. Sometimes, recycling the head unit helps. Very irritating.

Shows just how bad the CVTs were at Infiniti. I heard they are using a modified version of the 9 speed ZF tranny -- not sure it's true. Regardless, Infiniti has been the most mismanaged company in the world. All it took was ten years to ruin a good company. Whoever decided to ditch the the "G" and "FX" model names should be tarred and feathered.

I'm curious, what do you like about it? I've got the iDrive in our X5, and the UI looks like something out of the 90's. CarPlay projects up on the heads up display, so I don't need the map on the driver's dashboard. BMW also includes the turning directions there from CarPlay.

I could see this part being true in why BMW owners don't like CarPlay, but I've had few issues with Wireless CarPlay. It's much better than having to plug in to the head unit with my Jeep.
What version if iDrive do you have?

I have iDrive 7 in my 530e w/ HUD as you have as well. The CarPlay integration in the HUD only gives me turn by turn cards, but the BMW navigation gives me a full map in the HUD and cluster as I get close to turns and upcoming directional changes (like an exit or etc). The messages integration allows me to view threads and respond to them via voice whereas CarPlay only allows me to have them read out loud, but I can’t pick which one to have read out loud.

For me the navigation is spot on with everything from traffic delays to being super accurate in estimating ETA. It also does a great job of catching upcoming traffic dangers and alerting me to them. Like when it accurately let me know about a wall of cars as I came around what was a blind turn before I snapped the below picture. As is common in Philly it was clear lanes moving at 60+ and then come around a turn and dead stop. Car let me know well ahead and it was accurate down to the foot on how far away it was.

Well not so different than apple lock in features that can easily give it to slight older model. But I guess when u love a brand so much u would be fine

Meanwhile, I would love it if Hyundai would allow me to add WIRED CarPlay to my 2021 Elantra SEL.

The car ONLY supports Wireless CarPlay. There is no option to use wired (despite the car supporting wired/wireless Android Auto).

Wireless CarPlay has been nothing but a nightmare since I got the car (April 2021). Audio quality is fine (although I suppose I can't compare side-by-side), but performance is slower than wired performance I've experienced on previous vehicles. There's a noticeable lag between touching screen and corresponding response. Irritating, but not a total dealbreaker, I suppose.

More than anything, though, Wireless CarPlay has major issues with maintaining connection (presumably due to interference over wifi). This happens most frequently when using map applications (Apple or Google). Depending on the area I'm driving, I may lose connection multiple times in the span of less than 10 minutes. I never once lost connection on my previous vehicle with Wired CarPlay.

This is not an isolated issue for just me or this model, though. Search online and you'll see posts from different makes and models reporting the same problem. If someone has a definitive way to fix this, I am all ears -- but, everything I've read and tried thus far has failed.

Infiniti today announced that most of its 2020 and newer vehicles are now eligible for a complimentary upgrade to wireless CarPlay in the United States.

The free software update is available for 2020 and 2021 models of the Q50, Q60, QX50, and QX80 from now until March 31, 2022, according to Infiniti. Owners of these vehicles can schedule an appointment at an Infiniti dealership to have the update completed.

Infiniti is also offering wireless CarPlay in 2022 models of the Q50, Q60, QX55, QX60, and QX80.

Infiniti, the luxury brand of Japanese automaker Nissan, was a late adopter of CarPlay. MacRumors editor-in-chief Eric Slivka reviewed wired CarPlay in the 2020 QX50 last year and the vehicle is now eligible for the complimentary wireless CarPlay upgrade.

Wireless CarPlay works over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, allowing for an iPhone to be connected to the infotainment system without a Lightning cable. Infiniti joins a long list of automakers that have started adopting wireless CarPlay, including Hyundai, Honda, Acura, Ford, GM, Chrysler, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and others.

wait is that interior from a 2021 Infiniti? or 2001? It looks like a piece of living room furniture.

Yeah absolutely. When I read the article title my first thought was “imagine a VAG car brand offering an update like this. Never gonna happen.”

I'm assuming I have iDrive 7 if that's the latest (honestly don't know what version but will be investigating this tomorrow) since it's a MY2021 X5 xdrive45e. My Rubicon had a bare bones system, so putting in a Pioneer head unit with wired CarPlay was a game changer for me. I'm so used to dealing with crappy car interfaces that when I drive the BMW (it's the wife's new car) I just default to CarPlay. Fortunately, Phoenix is a massive grid with essentially no traffic (grew up driving in Los Angeles so my definition of traffic is a bit different than others), so I don't spend much time worrying about directions at the moment. Appreciate you sharing your perspective, I'll spend some time playing around with the OEM UI and see how it functions.
