Note that a NAS does not directly connect to an Apple TV Ethernet port to provide local storage. A NAS is meant to be on the same network and can provide file sharing via industry standard protocols supported by a limited number of apps such as Infuse, Plex, and VLC.
Pity. Was hoping that would give you at least temp remedy and then discover items like a NAS. If all you are doing is playback for the most part of movies, there are plenty of 2 drive capable NAS out there that will provide you will both drives having the same data storage to avoid the tragedy of a single drive failure.No USB ports on the router.
