Hi folks,

I realise this title suggests I'm planning to commit heresy, but I'm just trying to understand if there are any decent ways of making this lovely G3 usable in a more conventional way in 2026? Or if I should just appreciate it for what it is and use it accordingly.

It has 128MB which I'm planning to upgrade to the max 1GB (2 X 512mb), probably going to fit an SSD at the same time and replace the battery.
It's obviously not an absolutely top spec release at the time, but pretty good all things considered.

I have two potential routes with this, and would welcome thoughts:

1) Dual boot OS 9 & Tiger 10.4 and just enjoy it for what it is, have a media library on there and just use it for music and playing games, with the potential maybe for some web browsing/youtube if there is any 3rd party options that support this

2) Explore alternative OS options which may allow more of a modern use, however I've not seen anything that makes me think there is much that can be done with decent web browsing/spotify functionality due to it's architecture/physical limitations.

I'm super excited to have this in my ownership!

My main computer is a 2009 4,1->5,1 Mac Pro using OCLP for Monterey
I've got a 2005 Mac Mini running 10.4 using the demo version of Bootcamp, which runs XP
I had a Powermac G4 running a sonnet dual processor upgrade, but unfortunately got taken to the dump in a freak turn of events going back some 15 years ago.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Powerfox will load most websites on a G3, including Spotify, though since I only have G4s myself I can't speak to how useable Spotify is in browser.
Aquafox is the browser of choice for G3s on the websites it loads, but Powerfox has better compatibility.
If you don't mind learning some programming, you can build PowerPC Ports from source against an external curl I made that is on Macintosh Garden, and maybe fix up spotify-dl or another command line client for better performance.
Alternatively, Pandora is easy to use with PianoPPC.
Tiger can do just about anything if you are willing to put in the work. Especially with a Gig of ram, less than that is painful.
PowerPC Linux is unlikely to offer much better performance, the primary limitation is a 400 Mhz G3 processor.
I use G4 laptops as my primary computers, which aren't crazily more powerful than a G3, except for multimedia use.
Edit: on the browsing front, Z970 has a nicely optimized AquaFoxBox browser I am forgetting the name of.
PowerPC Linux has Luakit, which some have spoken highly of if you don't like Firefox forks

Like anything, there are ways. It just depends on how much you are willing to do, for how long, and how much pain you might be willing to endure for the result.

The older the PowerPC Mac, the harder all that will get/be.

Personally, I'd just enjoy it for what it is and run the stuff from its time period. I have a 4,1 upgraded to a 5,1 myself with Sonoma, and web browsing being a primary thing for me there is no way I'd be comfortable/willing to use a 400mhz G3 for that.

But for the time period it was primarily used, there are still things that G3 can do with period software.

Hello!
1) from what I know, spotify can't work on any web browser (powerfox/interwebppc/aquafox) for powerpc because of webrtc & ecc.
Anyway you can use Soundcloud with ublock origin and it works really fine! (this under mac os x tiger)
2) you can also try ArchPOWER, which is modern arch linux, but also there is no spotify.
but there is tidal with a client named "high-tide" that work fine.
3) for general web browsing just use umatrix & ublock origin on powerfox.
4) for the powerbook g4 there are better chances with powerfox or phantomsatellite on archPOWER.
Hope this can be helpful for you, and there is a photo of my g3 with powerfox & SoundCloud! 😀
