input level auto adjusting

Hey,

My sisters mac book pro has been auto adjsuting the input level even when we manually set it. The result is severe output for whoever we are audio-chatting with. Its actually cracking speakers. I've never had this problem on my other apples. However, it's our first laptop...is this a common laptop feature? Can I disengage? Perhaps in terminal?

Is this with the internal microphone or with an external? Does it get reset to the maximum or to the centre? 🙂
