Jim, did you get a new MBA yet? I know you have an 11" but have you purchased the new 2013 model? if yes..what config?

I have an 11" that I use as my corporate machine... and I also have 13" that I use for personal use.

I am going to merge both again (I used to use just one machine) using two different user logins... one for personal, and the other for my corporate stuff. I'm getting tired of carrying both machines on trips. Plus the longer battery life adds a new element of usability. Now I will not bother connecting to a charger during the day (unless it is connected to my home ATD, or work ACD). With ~12 hour battery life, charging during the day will not be necessary.

I'm going to get the 13", i7, 8GB, 512 GB model. I always by the top model every year. There are 5 of us in my family... so I just buy one of everything every year (iPhone, iPad, MBA, iMac)... and I continually have the latest... and everyone else is happy with my leftovers. This way we use our computers for about 5 years... which is a reasonable life. By buying the top models... we have not had a problem having them be really usable over the 5 year lifespan.

I use CoolBook and keep brightness down to 3rd bar. Note, this shot was taken coming out of standby, so I'm joking around a little bit. But this machine will actually get over 10+ hours, as verified by Anand.

Ahhh ok ;) I wish that app isn't limited to Core 2 Duo CPUs!

Jim it makes perfectly sense if you are going to be passing the laptops to your family members, the ultimate model will be good for 5 years or more.

I have the 11" for a week and just last night when I was working in a patio table and the chair position was not so close to the table and I think it was a little uncomfortable to work while e-mailing my customers.

I'm used to the 1280x800 on my early 2011 Macbook Pro and I'm wondering if the 13" Macbook Air will make a difference as the screen is bigger than the 11" but the resolution is also higher than my 2011 MBP.

You have both machines, can you tell if the changes are only in vertical screen real estate and resolution is similar or the 13" will have bigger fonts ,etc

Thanks.

I win for worse battery life lol. 2011 13" MBA :p

I actually wasn't interested in the MBA until the 2012 model that featured decent enough battery life (I was getting 6ish on my '12 13" base model).

I couldn't justify the price of a MBA for 4 hours life in 2011 :p

Yeah i usually only get 5 hours max so im always on the plug but i still love the thing to death, im about to sell it and upgrade to the 2013 13" MBA i5 with 8gb Ram and 256gb SSD. 13+ hours here i come :D

Coolbook? Sorry for the hijack, but I have a C2D MacBook Pro. How much battery life increase will I see by underclocking? Will the speed decrease be noticeable?

I see on your drop-down battery menu that it features firefox as being a heavy user of battery life. I don't see anything similar on mine.

Is that a setting you need to turn on, or does it only feature when you have apps really using up battery juice?

That is a new feature of OSX Mavericks. The whole of Activity Monitor has been redesigned too.

I was testing on Maverics too but reinstalled ML, I'm afraid is just DP1 and not fully baked, some apps do not work ,I cannot get out of full screen sometimes and battery readings are superb one day and very poor the next day, I do not think it will be accurate to make a decision based on Mavericks DP1

Im not making any decisions lol. For what its worth my battery life has improved since running Mavericks according to my Battery Logger app.

Firefox. It has always killed my battery life. That's why I went back to Safari.

Safari is slow to load web pages and has choppy scrolling in Mavericks, its really bad. Chrome and Firefox run fine.

I have a 13"/i5/8gb/128 and get awesome battery life.

In lecture this morning taking notes on it for 2.5 hours (lecture started at 9)

Although it does seem to drain slower at the beginning of use for me and becomes more normal later. I get around 12 hours of average use for web browsing and non power activities.
I think 20:00 is the maximum the battery will indicate left because it told me that for most of class.

That will change as soon as you open a couple of apps, if you are going to always take notes and not open any apps etc battery life will go over what's advertised.

does the new macbook 2013 run coolbook?

I do not think the fonts are larger... but then, I normally do not use them side-by-side... so I could be wrong. I often change the font size on the fly, using Safari's font size buttons (i've added them to the toolbar)... or the command+/- keystrokes.

Overall... I am more comfortable (visually) using the 13". I am more comfortable (physical handling) with the 11".

BTW: I think the difference in weight is immaterial regarding "weight in your backpack". The real difference in feel is when you handling it in actual use. Once again... on the desk, it doesn't matter at all. However, if you are sitting on the couch, moving it (one handed) from your lap, to the coffee table, to the seat next to you, back to your lap, etc... then there is a big effective difference between the 11" and 13". Much of this is due to the "moment" or "lever factor" of the laptop. I generally reposition the laptop with a single hand gripping the MBA in the front right hand corner with two fingers & thumb. Because the open screen is further away from the place I hold the machine... the moment/lever factor is higher... multiplying the affect of the actual weight.

Still... at the end of the day... I am planning to buy a 13" this time.
