ok... I have a close up shot of my buddy saying the phrase "swampus cat" and I would like to somehow insert that word in some kind of weird font, so it fades in quickly right as he says it, and then fades out quickly....whats the easiest way to do this?

any help is mucho appreciated

The easiest way to do this (and I am presuming you understand motion keyframes and how do add text in) is to create your text, layer it above you video, and then apply the motion effects to it do get it to move like you want it, to get it to fade in and out, put cross dissolves on either end, and that will do the trick.

If you have FCP HD, you have Livetype included. Livetype is much more capable with text effects, dissolves, transparencies, etc. than FCP.
