They said 300 cities in China but doesn't seem to work in any (yet?)
Only from within China, at least for now it's hiding behind the Great Firewall and with a Chinese carrier's SIM. Cut to "China's Apple Maps surprise":

A few weeks ago, my brother was in HK with his ATTWS SIM - not much was showing up. In Shenzhen, with a Chinese SIM, data lit up like a blowtorch in a dark closet.

I must have missed the NearBy feature announcement because that was a shock when I opened the Maps App. A very very pleasant shock.

Awesome!

One city in the entire state of California? Are you kidding me? Are you ******* kidding me?

I was hoping that, with the acquisition of Embark, Maps would have better and more accurate subway trip planning. Unfortunately, the original Embark app (which hasn't seen an update since 2013) still works better. It gives you accurate choices in terms of changing trains and transit times. Embark is pretty much always spot on for me. Maps... I just don't trust it. There's currently a 10 minute transit time difference for a particular trip and, according to Embark, it's be faster to take an express train and switch to a local near the end. Apple Maps is just giving me the slowest, local route. Weird. Apple, you had a great app to build from, how did you manage to screw that up?

I'm kind of surprised Boston isn't included in the Transit feature yet. Our transportation authority has been rolling out fancy new data about all the trains for a while now, and just last year (or the year before, I forgot) they opened up and made publicly available all the data about real-time bus and train locations and timing. This has resulted in many cool apps that take advantage of the data.

Seems like low-hanging fruit for Apple (put intended) to include Boston. Wonder why they decided to skip it for this round.
According to an article on 9to5Mac from May 26th, Boston and Tokyo are up next. Here's hoping! (And they better include the Green Line.)
