It's a visual analogy of what was already said.

Since then have moved across to transparent computers with transparent mainboards - when immersed in cooling oils or cooling gel they disappear. Use of thermally sensitive particles to show the temp as colour depending on thermal load. Nothing to do with apple though. Thermal gel is only a gel below 100F or 40C, helps to work with jelly when trying to do repairs.
