So what do you think the over/under is on how many screens will go bad or turn colors from heat issues?

OOOOR ... Will the heat not be an issue with the thinness of the whole system because apple has tested it for numerous hours and all is good

Otherwise, an external SSD drive might be used through either the USB3 or TB ports with the small enclosure mounted to the stand.

will tb and usb3 have similar speed as the internal sata connector for ssd data transfer?

Time will tell. I'm not even certain that heat was the only factor in the screen issues. If it was a factor, I would hope that Apple has thoroughly tested the new design.

at this point I've pretty much decided to just buy the 16GB of ram directly from apple (Totally BLOWS Apple!!!). The picture makes it look like the whole logic baord has to be removed for the ram to be swapped out.

On the 27" there is a door in the back to change out the RAM. For the 21.5" it looks like you'll have to get out the suction cups. I don't think you'll have to mess with the logic board though, as it should come out with the display assembly in one piece.

Wounder how long it will take someone to fit Ssd into the 2012 iMac

Not long .... you can simply order it with one .... :)

BTW: OWC sent out an email today revealing that the 13" MBPr uses the same SSD blade as the MBAir and 15" MBPr, and they suspect that the iMac will also use that part (they will confirm next month when they are available). They have several models of blade SSDs to add/retrofit these computers.

Aaaaahhhh. I get it. The logic board extends under the exhaust shroud. Shoulda seen that

So GPU is integrated onto the logic board rather than an installed card. No more graphics card swap if the original one dies. Whole logic board replacement required.

Wait for the ifixit teardown. I see screws holding down the GPU, in fact looks very similar to the GPU assembly in the 2011 iMac (GPU/Heatsink). I replaced my 512mb assembly with a 2GB one without too much trouble.

I really hope this is the case. If the computer is glued together I think this forum will riot.

Agree but unfortunately the other 95% of people that buy IMacs will not know or care.

I pray for magnets.

I pray for magnets.

Reminds me of Charlie in It's always sunny in Philadelphia:

Dennis: Okay, alright, what’s your favorite hobby?
Charlie: Uh, magnets.
Dennis: Magnets.. okay, making magnets, collecting magnets..?
Mac: Playing with magnets..?
Charlie: Just magnets.

:D

I feel like an idiot making an ultimatum nobody cares about, but if the HDD is not at least as accessible as the 2010 imacs was, NO BUY. I simply refuse to buy a disposable desktop, and I refuse to payu whatever outrageous amount Apple is going to charge for bTO 3TB HDD (probably $500 or more) when I can get a 4TB for $250 and put it in myself.

Hopefully, given the news about the 13" retina being slightly more accessible, things are looking good?

Agree, it will be a hard decision to make but like I said before to most people who just do basic tasks on the machine it will not be an issue.

The iMac SSD is now of the "blade" design like the Air, which limits your choices for upgrade (OWC makes upgrades, but they are expensive).

So in actual fact, the $300 price tag on the 256G SSD option (for the mini is not too bad) - although you do lose your 1 TB drive as part of the deal. With a iMac, would you get to keep your 1 TB drive if you upgrade to the 256 SSD?

The only internal photo of the new iMac I have seen appears to be the 27" model (4 memory slots) and it shows both blade SSD and 3.5" hard disk being mounted. Until Apple releases BTO details, we won't know what configurations will be offered in drive combinations. Hopefully, that will be soon! :)

Don't discount the leaked photo of the iMac logic board from that Chinese forum in regard to the 21.5". After seeing the inside of the 27", this legitimizes that leaked photo. That is clearly a 21.5" that was leaked. The image was the iMac without the screen installed (the image was showing the bottom of the logicboard, which would face out toward the front). The image also had the 2.5" HDD laying longways. If the screen is one simple unit that is attached easily (e.g., not glued down), then it shouldn't be too difficult to swap out at all. Then we just need to worry about sensors and firmware and all that fun stuff...

Look at the pic

Now. Call me crazy or optimistic, but look to the top left. Look at those little square things around the edge of the rear aluminum shell. It looks like it could be 3 things:

1. A gasket of sorts that folds downward when the screen is in place.

2. A sort of mounting post the screen clicks into.

3. Magnets of some sorts.

Thoughts?

We have the previous leaked photo as well. It's inconsistent with the one in the presentation so I'm guessing it's from the 21.5" model. Also, obviously, it's taken from the front with the screen removed.

It doesn't give many clues, except that the fan leans to the other side, and that the HDD looks smaller so it could be that it ships with a 2.5" instead of a 3.5".

Did we just become best friends? YUP!

Yes the fan is leaning to the other side on the 21.5" it appears. Also, it seems like the GPU is located slightly higher than the CPU, if the bracket to a chip socket on the top right is indeed for the GPU (going off of the general layout of the official 27" picture).

What's your thoughts on the top left black gasket looking thing? Magnets? Just a gasket? A place for the workers to put glue for the screen (slightly joking about that last one)?

Wow ... same thing ... 2 minutes apart! :)

That picture would tend to collaborate the discussions regarding the use of 2.5" 5400rpm disks in these units. There is no obvious SSD (blade or otherwise) shown in the picture, although some at the bottom isn't visible, nor is the backside of the logic boards. This would lend more speculation on how the "fusion" is integrated into the 21.5" iMac.

High five!

My guess is that it's some kind of spacer to stabilize the screen, maybe gasket is a good word for it. I am pretty sure the glass is not glued to the unit - that only makes sense for smaller portable products like the ipad etc. So I think it's a fair bet that the glass will be held with magnets again.

That in it's turn means that the new iMacs might be even more serviceable than the current model.

That would be pretty cool if you could simply pull the entire assembly out of the rear shell without removing the display and the associated delicate cables and have the working side of the electronics easily accessible along with the disk drives.

That would also mean you could fire it up for testing out on the bench without having to reassemble everything each time.

There is still hope.

I wonder if this will be true and we will be able to simple open the iMac with just magnets. If so it could be easier to open as there will be less problems with dust getting between the glass and the screen as it will all be sealed together. I am thinking of going from windows now finally after years of defending windows for what it is but the whole thing now for me is outdated. Why stick with boring cases where it is 80 percent air. Devices are getting more density packed electronically so why not physically as well.

If anybody is thinking about the original picture showing the inside of the imac during the apple presentation being true to how the computer goes together then I think this is not the case. I think this is just a setup image to illustrate the internal components of the thing. The leaked picture showing the screen removed is how I imagine both versions will come apart. Knowing this it will make upgrades and small tweaks more simple. I don't want to go to the apple store just because there is some dust build up in the one and only fan unit. Besides the mac store will only be around for the first year unless additional cover is bought.

For me now it is a toss up between a 2011 unit and a 2013 unit it their ability to broken down and opened up because that was what Windows was for me.
