This is my first post under new name, Ive been around since 2003, but I forgot my user name and email provider doesn't exist anymore, thats just the way it goes.

I received a new Insta360 Link2 webcam with motorized 2 axis gimbal a few days ago. Im using a 2020 M1 Mac Mini with 16 gig ram 256 ssd storage, stuff like photos and music have been off loaded to external ssd, current Macos is Sequoia, apart from things running in the background, its the usual but more on this OS and Little Snitch, this Mac is a daily driver, I like to present what my Mac is and what it is doing so people can get their heads around what to expect, everybody is different with their usage, providing more info helps.

The cam does a very good job, it was released Septeber 2024, so its new, its also very good at 4k at 30fps, 1080 at 30 fps is also very good, to get 1080 at 60 fps, the camera must be in portrait mode, meaning you must flip the camera manually on its side, this may take some doing because of mounting, the sensor is 1/2 inch, its larger than the average webcam, the f stop is 1.8, Ive seen lower but the average webcam is f2.1 and more. When dealing with is webcam you must be aware of power needed, I will present in amps, the cam needs 5 volts at 1 amp, but you can get away with 4.5 volts at 900 milliamps in usb 3, Ive tested it at portrait mode at 60 fps, it still didnt blow the 900 milliamp max on usb 3, if your using a un-powered usb hub, you may blow it, on usb 2, the camera will light up and stop, the recomended connection is usb c which will give you 1.5 amps. The company says the cam will rival a DSLR, simple answer is, no it doesn't, a full frame DSLR webcam enabled will out do the Insta360, its a great webcam and thats it, you can do many things with it, but it will not take on a DSLR, the wecam has a larger cmos sensor, but its still a webcam, although its a good webcam, especially if you dont wnt to spend the money on a DSLR, any questions, Id love to answer if I can.

It’s a great webcam. I have one plugged straight into the back of my Pro Display XDR and it works flawlessly.

Set it up once on each of mine and my wife’s MacBook Pros and it just works on whichever is plugged in at that moment.

I have to look into the powered hub on a Asus pro art screen, its 32" 4k that can be flipped to portrait, the problem is the cam must be flipped on its side to do 1080 at 60 fps. The tracking function works well in facetime, Im sure its going to work on other software as long as the controller is turned on, the one issue I have is there is nothing to turn off the audio, so I just unplug it, Insta360 has already been it up with the issue, we'll see what comes up next controller update.
