Instagram has begun testing various ads that will allow users to shop for everything from clothing to menu items at local restaurants, integrating new iPhone features like 3D Touch and Apple Pay as well (via Digiday). The social network has had ads appear in users' feeds for a while now, but hopes that more unobtrusive shopping experiences that keep users in the app itself will attract bigger brands to the service.

"From an innovation standpoint, Instagram is where a lot of brands are putting the most eggs," said an ad agency executive familiar with the tests. "Force touch gets interesting, because instead of quickly tapping Shop Now to buy this one thing, you can choose from two or three offers. It makes for more frictionless shopping."
3D Touch integration will let users press harder on the ad to toggle between various selections from a clothing brand, for instance. The addition of Apple Pay aims to add to the "frictionless shopping" experience by letting users purchase something they see directly within Instagram, without having to visit the brand's own app or Safari to complete the purchase.

Instagram, owned by Facebook, is attempting to get a cut from the sales of many of the products that its service generates naturally, according to Digiday's sources. Some of those sources fear Instagram's commercialization due to the heavily-marketed advertisements being tested on the platform, suggesting the photo-focused service is best left as a "branding opportunity" for companies and leaving the sales portion to its parent site, Facebook.

Edit: On iPhone, the pressure-sensitive feature is called 3-D Touch, not Force Touch. Please update the article :)

In my opinion, the MacBook's trackpad pressure-sensitive feature should Joe be renamed to 3-D Touch as well, to provide more consistency in naming.

the only justification i think is that 'force touch' is a concept, '3D touch' is an implementation. For example its all called pizza, but there is deep dish, thin crust...

Bah, thanks Daniel, still not used to the different phrases yet.

3D Touch has been a disappointing feature as no apps have integrated the feature. If they have integrated the feature, they only did the quick glance icon, which is a boring feature because I don't need 5 ways to get into the app.

Now 3D Touch is being used for ads? I'll pass!

Not sure why 3D touch is necessary, but I approve of this.

It's not the basic concept of ads that suck, but the implementation that has always sucked. A lot of the time it's just an endless barrage of crap that I don't care about that is stealing various resources away from the content of a website or app that I do care about.

I approve of attempts to improve on ads. Make them more seamless. Actually show me things that I'm interested in.

Well it's a free service.

Meanwhile, we pay for TV and barely complain about commercials.
I have almost completely stopped watching broadcast TV (and only have local channels anyway because they are part of my Internet package), in part because of the endless barrage of commercials. There are many alternatives without this crap now, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Now or the adfree tier on Hulu.

I agree, I'm cutting the cord soon and getting an Apple TV.

But my point was that free services have to make money somehow. I'd gladly pay for an ad-free version, but don't expect free services without ads.

Force Touch is an implementation just like 3D Touch. A more likely reason is Apple can't use Force Touch in connection with a phone because Huawei has the rights to Force Touch relating to phones. Thus, 3D Touch was born.

Really? Examples of apps that have implemented 3D touch: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Wechat, Skype, Line, Shazam, Launcher, Dropbox, Evernote, Opentable, Stubhub, News360, Pinterest, Hipstametic Camera, Magic Piano, Launch Centre Pro etc.

But yeah sure no one has implemented it.

And please, do pass.

Tweetbot is very good with it

LOL you were able to list 18 apps. There are 1.5 million iPhone apps. 1 million are probably crap or abandoned so 18 out of 500,000... yes that's bad. Maybe for the social-elites who spend 8 hours on social media, then yeah, the feature must be great. I do use Facebook and Instagram but only check 1-2 times a day. Again as well, Facebook only has the 3D icon, nothing else. In other words, putting FB up there is stretching it. Instagram has one of the best integrations of 3D touch but that's really only 1 app that has really taken advantage of it.

Your response shows that you just want to reassert your already proven wrong statement. Also, those are only the apps that I am using personally, hence "etc." at the end. The exact number is gonna be higher. "LOL"

Dude, admit it. There are less than 100 apps total. You're wrong and you clearly can't handle it.

Make that 101 because Target was just updated for 3D touch. You can now view the weekly ad by pressing the icon. That's a cool implementation.

Actually, it's at least 1000 according to appshopper.com. The number would likely be much higher if they could display more than 1000 results on a search.
