Interesting move. There are a lot of people whose life is wrapped up in those Likes.

I wonder if this a push to move people back to Facebook?? I’m on neither, so I have no idea to be honest. Just curious on what’s behind this. Interesting indeed.

Exactly, it does not affect me personally, but this is basically the way people use Instagram. You discover content like food or pet videos based on likes and you may know ahead if you want to watch a video depending on the number of likes.

I do not welcome this move. Some companies and “influencers” make a living out of engagement and “likes”, as much as I find them superfluos, this is going to hinder their work.
It’s the core of IG. It’s gonna kill it pretty much. I’m not an influencer, but I’ve built a solid base of followers and people that I follow mostly related to travel content. I don’t make any money on it, nor have I ever paid for anything on IG. However, I really enjoy engaging with people through likes. It helps you discover new content and users/accounts. I do hope they at least will keep the “invisible” likes, so you would be able to see who liked your content. I thought it was their original plan.

It means that Instagram went to pot when all those low quality photos from android were further compressed and allowed to be uploaded.
This is probably the silliest thing I’ve read in a while. This take definitely fits the Apple fanboy stereotype.

Bravo Instagram !

Social Media has cultivated a Dumb & Sheep mentality, with lots of overlap.

IMO, YouTube will (soon) follow suit, followed by Apple in their CURATED iOS App Store.

Another useless update, they should remove the annoying ads, there’s fb already spying and doing that so no reason to do it on Instagram too

I would actually pay for an ad-free IG version. I'm a photographer and I interact with a lot of my friends there. I don't care much about likes and I don't explore past the people I already follow. But I hate the ads.

It makes no sense to throttle down the 'Likes' while letting 'influencers' to keep 'Doing Their Thang.' In the latter case, Fyre caused untold millions in lost money because those influencers played it all up. So instead, the focus ought to be reducing 'hurt feelings?'

That sounds like the right focus.

That sounds unfair to overgeneralize this only due to the whole Fyre debacle. That was a very complex scheme to begin with. You can't punish those influencers for doing their job that they were paid for. The same way many locals at the Bahamas were hired to do theirs for that "event".

Having had likes hidden from Instagram for months now it has only made the experience better. I even post more now that don’t have the pressure of thinking each shot has to be “perfect”.

Can you still see who’s liking your posts?

This sounds like another way for Facebook to get their users to pay to play. They pretty much killed the small-business FB page. Now they’re going to do it on Insta. And they’re also going to kill aspiring musicians and singers. IMO, this should be an OPTION – not an across the board thing – that is if they’re being truthful about their motives.

We’ve had this for about a month or so in Australia and it has been a very welcome change! As sad as it is, many of us younger people place too much importance on ‘likes’ being a contributing factor to self worth

I am remembering a time, back when Instagram first was launched on the App Store, when there were no likes or comments. Can anyone corroborate this? I think it would have been around 2010-2011.
