Can it be done.

I spent the $99 (plus tax) to join the developer team.
This allowed me to download the .dmg image.

I downloaded UltraISO and unpacked the file to get the .ipsw file
I double click on it, it launches iTunes and then nothing happens.

Did I just waste a lot of money?

oh great, now I cannot "register" my phone and is now unusable.
Any ideas as to how to proceed from here?

Damn.

John

I had the same thing. You need to register your device with Apple, but I had to boot into osx to do this part. I attached my ipod(would work with iphone) to my laptop and opened up xcode. This lets you get the devices ID, then you need to log into the developer portal and add a new device with that ID. You can then go back into windows and it should work.

there is a lot more process than just simply downloading the file. The step by step instruction is pretty detailed out.

I hope you can downgrade..

It took me an hour or so just to get it up and running.

Nope. Screwed all around. I am so upset.
I run Windows, hence I can't run Xcode to get the magical number.

Since I now have a splash screen that says, "We're unable....", there is no icon to restore an old image in itunes. Can anybody offer a suggestion? HELP!

Do I need to go down the darkside and jailbreak, or it is even too late for me now for this?

I am desperate. Please help.

John

You need the UDID number in order to activate it through the Portal. I'm not sure how you find this number on the PC side (or if you can) but if you can get to a Mac plug in your iPhone and go to System Profilier-> USB -> iPhone and you'll find the number there next to serial number. Then you enter that (I don't know where seeing as I'm not a Dev but it's somewhere on the Dev site) and you'll be able to sync with iTunes again. You can't JB 3.0

I do see a screen on the iPhone giving me IMEI and a ICCID number.
Can these help at all?

its the UDID number that you need. But even if you find the UDID number, you still need to register your phone through the Developer Portal so that your phone is registered. Without it, you wont be able to activate your iPhone via iTunes.

Your best bet would be to have someone add you as their team member to their existing account.

It does seem he is a Dev (if the OP is true). So you just need to log on and enter that number and you should be good to go. :)

I wish I read this screen BEFORE I flash the firmware. I do not get that screen anymore. All I get is a cute Apple icon, and AT&T icon, and a message saying that is device is not registered.... There is nothing to click on. I went to the developer site, and tried entering the ICCID and it is expecting 40 characters on the site. This number is ICCID.

Am I officially screwed. Maybe I can take it to an Apple Store and they can "fix it"? or perhaps read the UDID number for me.

John

Sigh...

Which part of the iPhone Developer Program do you not understand?

It's for iPhone development, which can only be done on a Mac OSX...

If you have $99 to waste, send it my way.

Oh it's too late, hah!

Only reason why anyone should download 3.0 OS is for the purpose of getting a headstart in development, which Apple should offer at least the simulator for those that do not wish to burn $99!

Oh please. Kick a guy while he down. But, you are right. Now I just trying to back peddle to get back up.

Ruthless...

Not trying to kick you while you're down, but blindly diving off a cliff was not the brightest thing to do.

I would like to burn $99, but I seriously doubt I can recover the money from selling apps.

ok, you need to find a mac asap and download the sdk and ispw to it, then update to 3.0 on it, then make sure u add your uuid to the apple developer thing and your golden. Then biggest obstacle is getting a mac for about an hour to update to 3.0, after that you should be ok.

So let me get this right

1. You should connect your iPhone to iTunes first and then click on serial which will then show you the UID which u should copy.

2. Now sign up to be an apple developer and pay the $99.

3. Wait for the confirmation to be emailed to u. Some say 24hr. Some say 6 to 7 days.

4. Login to the portal and add your uid from just now there

5. Download the packaged file and extract the ipsw. Easily done with poweriso.

6. Connect iPhone to iTunes, shift+restore, locate the ipsw and all is fine

I don't see why u can't do it in windows

Ironically, the device is updated to 3.0. I just need to get the magic number and plug it into my apple developer web site. Once that is done, itunes should talk to the developer account and tell it everything is OK.

It sounds like the whale story from Star Trek 4 movie.

I plan on going to an Apple store and ask them to read the number off of it for me.

Lots of grief, but I think I will be ok.
