I'm planning to do a clean Lion installation (i.e. not the upgrade method). I don't have large enough USB stick or DVD (4.7GB disc isn't enough, right?) at hand now, so I'm wondering would it be possible to boot and run the installation from an external USB hard drive? The hard drive has two partitions, if it matters.

According to this tutorial, it should be possible, at least with Leopard:

you can install lion from any bootable partition that the DMG is restored onto.
