I'm flummoxed. Someone here will certainly know the answer.

I bought a used iMac with a new hard drive and a fresh Catalina installation.

Now whenever the iMac is restarted a disk image titled "Install macOS Catalina" appears on the desktop. For the life of me I cannot find its corresponding .dmg file.

I've tried OmniDiskSweeper. EasyFind.

Is it a network disk image?

Guys and gals, how do I stop "Install macOS Catalina" from appearing on the desktop?

Have you tried searching within Finder? Search "This Mac" for "Install macOS Catalina".images".

If you are comfortable with Terminal, you could try this. It searches all open files for the name "Install macOS Catalina" and shows the path to the disk image.

Code:
lsof | grep Install\ macOS\ Catalina

If you bought the computer used, the only smart thing to do is to restart from Internet Recovery, format the disk, and then reinstall the operating system from scratch. There's no way to know what's already on the computer; it's just a good security practice to wipe the computer before use.

Have you tried to eject the image? Is the iMac unsupported?

Have you tried opening Disk Utility to see what it thinks is mounted (DMGs usually site at the bottom of the left hand panel) - if it lists this one, then eject/unmount it.

There may even be a location of the DMG listed in the Disk Utility window when you right click on the installer name (see below).
