My wife hates the newest os on the new Imac I just bought for her. I want to format the entire drive and load mavericks, the last with iphoto I think. She hates the new Photos, and the new Mail. Is this possible? I want to format the whole drive, so that there is no trace of any software, or start up drive. Help!

If your "new" iMac is a 27" late 2014 or later then it will not support OS 10.9. Macs do not support OSs older than they shipped with. You might be able to do something using VMs (Virtual Machine software), but I do not have any experience with this method.

Generally you can't load an OS older than than one that shipped with your machine. Lacks drivers, etc for the newer hardware.

Mail has an option in it's preferences/general for using the classic UI. If that is her main complaint about mail then checking that may solve it. Unfortunately nothing like that for photos. I happen to like the new photos and hated iPhoto with a passion, so to each their own. Maybe she just needs more time to play around with it.

It's impossible to install Mavericks on last iMac.
But you can still install iPhotos on Sierra.

You didn't tell us which version of the OS is on the iMac.

Be aware that you CAN use the final version of iPhoto (9.6.1) with all OS versions including Sierra (10.12)

BUT -- chances are you won't be able to get it through the "official" Apple download channels.

Don't let this stop you. You can find it from "UNofficial sources" if you look (i.e., the torrents).

Whether you wish to do this is up to you. I've had no problems doing so.
