Install OS on to an external HD?

How do I install an os on to an external hard drive using my mbpr? I want to install an older os such as 10.6.3 possibly older....

You can't use an older OSX than the one that came with your Mac.

I dont have the cds for it, its old, model may have been worn off. its a white 2.4 core 2 duo

If I'm no mistaken, those came with Tiger OSX 10.4

That model should run Snow Leopard. Call Apple at 1800MYAPPLE and they will sell you a Snow Leopard disk for $19.99.
