Install OS on to an external HD?

    How do I install an os on to an external hard drive using my mbpr? I want to install an older os such as 10.6.3 possibly older....

    You can't use an older OSX than the one that came with your Mac.

    okay, how do I find out what osx I need for an older white macbook?

    What's the model number? Do you have the original CDs that came with it?

    I dont have the cds for it, its old, model may have been worn off. its a white 2.4 core 2 duo

    If I'm no mistaken, those came with Tiger OSX 10.4

    since apple does not offer them in the app store any more, what are my options?

    That model should run Snow Leopard. Call Apple at 1800MYAPPLE and they will sell you a Snow Leopard disk for $19.99.
