Okay, so I know that the main reason you can't install XP with an upgrade disc (without slipstreaming an inferior version of Windows onto the disc for verification) is because it needs verification of another version of Windows, but you can't eject the disc. There is a workaround with the Vista upgrade versions where you can just install a trial from the upgrade, which doesn't require you put in your license key, and then you use the disc to upgrade the trial to the full version from inside Vista, which you can then activate. So, should this work? Should I be able to install the trial in Boot Camp which is a fully functional version of Vista, since I don't have to eject the disc? And then I could upgrade from inside Vista like you can already do?

Has anyone actually tried this? Anyone willing to verify this for me?

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: just in case anyone was wondering, this is not piracy, it's listed as a way to install an upgrade on Microsoft's site:

If you read Microsoft's support note carefully, you will have seen that the Upgrade versions of Vista support upgrading from "a compliant version of Windows, such as Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows 2000."

That's direct from Paul Thurrott's guide to a clean install from an upgrade disc. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_upgrade_clean.asp

Confirmed to work by several people I found via posting on other forums. Not sure if it will work with the version of boot camp that ships with OS X Leopard though, I'll have to get someone to try it, because I'm getting a Mac soon, but not soon enough.
