Mistake..

w3570 = 3.20 ghz processor
w3580 = 3.33 ghz processor and its what Apple is using - I plan to get this one as I can get it for close to 700.00 buy it now.

This would be a drop in replacement for the w3520 or 2.66 processor.. Just wondering if its still possible for me to get apple care, but "HIDE" the processor's speed from them.

You should consider the recently announced W3565 (3.2GHz) at approx $560 vs. the W3570 (3.3GHz) at $1000.

I also have a 2.66 single quad-core mac pro.. In July as a birthday present, I plan to get the w3580 or w3570 - like the other person.. will this be just a simple drop in replacement? I know to apply artic silver evenly throughout the die of the chip, being careful not to overdo it.
Yes, it will work (SLBxx code, which is D0 stepping).

However, for those with duals - its much more difficult and from what I gather not possible.
It's been done actually, and with standard OEM parts that have the IHS on them.

See the other posts in aim I sent you

Yeah, I figured that out on my own.. regarding the heatsink and fan connector - see my notes in aim.

If it's a Xeon, it does, as Intel's ark site indicates that only D0 parts have been produced for the SP Xeon's so far.

VT = Yes
VT-d = No
QPI runs at 4.8 GT/s rather than 6.4 GT/s

Always the compromises... :D :p

How do you find out that the W3565 doesn't have VT-d?

Looking on the intel site the entire series has it!?

Does the W3520 have it?

I do use VMWare Fusion to virtualise so VT-d would be useful...

Toying up between the W3565, W3570 and W3580!

I went by the ark.intel.com site at the time of that post.

Now, it just shows Yes/No for VT-x (no differentiation between VT and VT-d, which I would now presume to mean the line is VT-d capable). But given the way the information was posed in the past, I'd want further clarification given the importance that it could mean for some users (either it's become ambiguous - meaning confusion/inaccurate information, previous information was incorrect, or newer parts have added that extention to VT).
