i just installed a new hard drive on my MacBook Pro and am trying to install OS X but when I insert my start up disc it says "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer."

From there, it gives me two options, Restore from Backup or Restart.
-I used time machine to back everything up and hoped I could restore from there but it doesn't let me.

What to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thank you

Is that the grey install disc that came with that computer? Or from another computer? Or is it a retail disc? Where did the disc come from?

yes, the grey install disc. I am using my roommate's disc since I can not find mine. it's version 10.6.3 (FYI).

The grey install discs that come with Macs are model-specific and will not work on other models. You can order replacement discs for your model by calling Apple (800-767-2775 in the US). Or you can upgrade to Mountain Lion via the Mac App Store.

so I called that number (thx for that) and apple sent me snow leopard but it will not install.

thoughts??

about 15min into the installation process, it stops installing and a prompt says "the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail."

Hi soundwarrior, I had this problem too and have spent about an hour on the phone to Apple who are sending me a new DVD.

However I decided to find the error log and see what was going on, it turned out a certificate had expired so the installer package was no longer trusted. I set the date on my iMac back to around the date I bought it and it worked fine! I hope this helps. If not and you go through the Express lane online, request an exception to having to pay when it gives you the option.

looked over that thread, gonna try disk utility option first and see what happens with the installation.

in regards to the error log and changing the date, any idea how to do that? the thread doesn't go into detail about it.

since I installed a new HD, I don't have access to my system preferences

Another option would be to get a USB to SATA adapter and put the old hard drive back in and use Carbon Copy to clone the old drive to the new and then swap drives.
