i am trying to get a dell printer to work with my macbook, but have had little success so far. it's a dell inkjet photo printer 720. now, i know that dell's printers are really just rebranded printers of other brands. i've determined that this dell printer is a lexmark inkjet z615. i downloaded the mac os x drivers for it off the lexmark website, but that doesn't seem to work. system profiler says that the printer is connected to the usb port, but when i run the printer setup i downloaded from the lexmark website, it says no printer is connected. and yes it's properly secured. what to do? thanks.

There seems to be two different drivers

What's the difference between them?
The second one is newer so you should use that. Have you tried Dells website, i think they have some Mac printer drivers now <EDIT> this printer only has windows drivers.

Sometimes i have noticed there might be a fault with the cable that comes with it.

both drivers are identical, as far as i can tell. neither works. so the cable might be the problem?

I have a feeling although the Lexmark and Dell printers are similar, they are not identical. They use different ink catridges. See this

Because Dell doesn't make a Mac driver, I am afraid you won't be able to use this printer.

get a new printer

Sadly, I used to work on these things. There was little attention given to the development of the mac drivers. Do you have any other printers installed? LXKs don't work well with others, even other LXKs.
The ink cartriges are the same except the tabs beneath the latches. Dell wanted to have their own so they could get some of that ink money. You can use LXK equivalent cart, if you modify the latches.
