I've tried to install a few programs for mac- namely, QuickTime 8 and Quinn. When I download it, it says I'm downloading a .dmg, but when it's finished, it says it's an .exe and tried to open in quicktime. Just renaming the file as a .dmg doesn't work.

First, QT 8 doesn't exist. Chances are that they are windows virii. You aren't getting them from shady sources are you???

I must mean quicktime7 then. That one was off the Apple site when I was trying to watch mac vs. pc ads.

The Quinn link is here: http://www.simonhaertel.de/quinn

I figured it out anyways- you have to do it in Safari for it to mount properly.

That's weird. I dont use Firefox though - maybe someone who does can weigh in on why it isn't downloading dmgs correctly.
