Installing from Leopard Update disk

Ok so my hard drive went nuts and I have to reformat. I'm trying to reformat with my leopard upgrade disk but it's says i need to have tiger first to do that. Must I really have to install tiger again to use this or is there a way around this??
 
Gotta reformat with tiger first, then do the leopard upgrade. Way around it? Sure - buy a full install disc for leopard.
